Whole30: Week #1 Reflection

Well friends, Week #1 of my Whole30-60-who-knows-how-long-I-will-go-on-like-this is complete!  I made it through The Hangover and Kill-All-The-Things stage. (But more on all that in a minute…) Let’s recap, shall we?

Weekly Ranking (1-10)
8.5

Overall, pretty great first week. (Better than my past “first weeks.”) The food was pretty delicious, I wasn’t overly peeved at the husband when he at an oven pizza right in front of me #MetabolismMan, and we had some very encouraging discussions in our Facebook Group.

On My Menu

Let’s see– what DID I eat this week? (I’ve been working on the computer most of the day so my brain is getting a wee bit mushy…) I had Madras Chicken Salad (from Nom Nom Paleo) for lunch all last week, and it was SO. TASTY. It’s always been one of my favorite meals. (Bonus: I prep the whole batch at the beginning of the week.)

Monday night supper was Walnut Crusted Pork Tenderloin and sides of Squash, mushrooms and broccoli with roasted red-pepper sauce and cole slaw. It was tasty but I should have cooked 2 tenderloins if I wanted leftovers (and it was a bit complicated for a weeknight.)

Otherwise, I had my staple Shepherds Pie on Wednesday, Balsamic Braised Ribs on Thursday (I was a bit underwhelmed with this one- not a lot of meat and it could also be that I just made it up since I couldn’t find my recipe card… Glad it was still edible!) Friday was “Chicken Nuggets” which the whole family can enjoy. Made a batch of Faux-tato salad (aka, potato salad that subs cauliflower for the potatoes) as well as a few different menu items. Pretty tasty week.

Victories

Honestly, I was kind of impressed with this week. We are super early into the W30 process, and I was feeling surprisingly good. I got up a little earlier to do quiet time. I had more overall energy during the day. And my workouts had finally stopped totally sucking. (The joint pain I had previously is almost completely gone already!

Other victories: I was planning to food prep on Sunday last week (and still did) but it was hard to rally since that morning I ended up in Urgent Care with Charis for an apparent ear infection. (At least it wasn’t pinkeye like we thought!) So the victory was I still food prepped after all that– and it was also the night after our military ball so I was beat tired.

Tuesday was a frustrating and emotional day, and I could feel the impulse to emotionally eat… but didn’t. HOORAY!

I’m already feeling way more empowered and less cravings than prior rounds of W30… definitely not as “deprived” as I thought I was (probably because I already feel less like crap.)

Oh, and twice  this week I actually left food on my plate because I was full. In the past, that NEVER would have happened!

Struggles

Not too many struggles this week. Getting back in the habit of cooking supper on a regular basis is challenging, especially now with two kiddos. (I pretty much haven’t cooked consistently for months, thanks to pregnancy and post-partum-ness. My husband likes to fend for himself.) I’m thinking this struggle will decrease as my energy/Tiger Blood kicks in.

Also, I still get a little overwhelmed with the forethought and planning this requires, mainly because my brain isn’t as sharp as it used to be. (I’m way more forgetful!)

Oh. And I still have a pesky ear infection hanging around… I’m on my third round of antibiotics (Gross!) and hoping that changing my diet will help me kick it for good.

Tweaks for Next Week

I don’t think I have a ton of changes for next week… One big one is I need to slow down when I eat. It’s hard because usually by the time mealtime rolls around, I am pretty hungry– plus I have an 11-week-old baby that needs my attention. (Somehow he always knows the minute I pick up the fork…)

But yes, overall– pretty solid week and I am excited to keep going deeper!
