The God-Mother Complex

It’s no secret that being a mother is one cool gig.

It’s also no secret that it is sometimes the hardest job on the planet.

As you (probably) know, we welcomed a new Tiny Human into the world almost three months ago. Time has flown– and honestly, I’m not really sad about it. (I will pause as you gasp and say, “Oh, treasure these days, for they go so fast,” etc.)

Nope. I like it when my kids start getting a little bit older and more “stable,” i.e., I don’t feel like I am going to break him every time I touch him. And the better sleeping habits too. Let’s not forget that.

During the last three months of night-feedings, I have had a lot of time to think. And pray.

And I’m sure it’s just me, but if I think too much, it can quickly turn into worry. [Read more…]

Faith: Do I have enough? #WilcoWednesday

Welcome to Wilco Wednesday! If you are a new around these parts, “Wilco” is Army-speak for “Will Comply.” Think of it as saying “Roger, God. Got it. Will do.”  So that is what Wednesday here at 7 Days Time is all about– exploring his decrees and seeking guidance for what complying with Him looks like in everyday life. The best part? He loves us for who we are, not what we do.  Remember: He doesn’t want perfection, just obedience. Share. Enjoy. Interact. And let’s respond to God’s call with  a hearty “Wilco, Lord!”  Welcome today my wise and loving friend, Katharina as she shares her heart with us.

Have you ever wondered how some people have faith that can move a mountain? I have! It seems to me that my faith is overshadowed more with doubt than anything else.

I would like to introduce to you George Müller (1805-1898). He opened up his heart and house to serve the orphans in Bristol, England. He and his wife started their ministry in their house with a Breakfast Club that began with 30 orphans, eventually growing to five large houses, which ultimately served over ten thousand children (Benge, J. & H., 1999, George Müller, The Guardian of Bristol’s Orphans). In a past life, I used to get bent out of shape pretty easy. And by past life, I mean like 36 seconds ago.

Yes, I admit it– I am what many would deem “high-strung.” I don’t know if it my achieving nature (sometimes dangerous) or my perfectionist tendencies (always dangerous) but it doesn’t take much to send me reeling.

One minute I can be basking in a metaphorical tub of peace and the next I am gasping for breath as the waters of worry attempt to overtake me.

Fortunately, God has brought me a long way in this journey. And because I love you, I want to share my latest tool that has helped me freak out less and rest more. [Read more…]

Faith & Feelings: Worry

Worry About Nothing, Pray About Everything

Photo courtesy Morten Gade via Flickr

Over the last several weeks, we have used our Mondays to talk about how faith and feelings interact.

We have discussed anger, frustration, joy, and weariness. Today is the final major feeling and it’s a doozy.

Worry.  [Read more…]

War on Worry (Anxiety-Free Monday, Week #9)

Soooo… What are YOU worried about?

Seriously. What was your first thought? Finances? Family? Job? Relationships? Or *perhaps* you were one of the few folks who’s first thought was “Nothing.” (If that is you, congrats. Feel free to skip today’s post. Just kidding. You are already here. Might as well read on right?)

But if you are like the rest of us in the world, you had some initial heart-thudding answer to the “worry” question. Ever since I was a little girl, I have been a worrier. However… God has called us to fight it.

We are at war… At war with worry. [Read more…]

The Choice (Anxiety-Free Monday, Wk 3)

Hmmm… Coke or Pepsi? Tennis shoes or boots? Salad or Big Mac?

We make thousands of choices a day. I know that sounds a little bit crazy, but seriously– just think about it. From the moment we wake up, our brain is buzzing, making decisions before our feet even hit the floor. (Even the action of getting out of bed is a choice!)

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I get a little overwhelmed with all the choices that whack me in the face each day. Sure, I love having control (which is an entirely separate issue) but some days I halfway wish someone would just make the choice for me.

Especially the difficult ones. [Read more…]

So long, Anxious Heart

I scan my list… Do I have everything? What if I forget something? I swallow the lump that is growing in my throat. My heart starts to beat faster. I glance down at my watch… Should I leave now? Or do I have more time?

If you have been hanging out with me here at 7 Days Time for a while, you have figured out that I am something of a worrywart. Honestly, it is super annoying and exhausting. Fortunately, God has used 2012 (and a majority of my adult life) to slowly but surely start weaning me from worrying. But he’s not done yet. [Read more…]
