“God is moved by us.  When He signed up for love, He signed up for pain.”  ~Beth Moore

Remember as a child what it meant to “pinkie promise” or to agree with our lips with fingers crossed behind our backs? Some of us find it difficult to outgrow that practice.  It may not be that easy for us in relationships to keep our commitments or to love another unconditionally and forever.  In relationships with siblings, parents, relatives, friends, husbands, even adult children – we have made promises, but what happens when the thrill or ease of our “I promise” fades?  [Read more…]

“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing” John 15:5 ESV

For the last couple of months, the Lord has been teaching me to sit still at his feet and listen to his voice as he fills my inmost desires.

In the past, my prayers started with: “Lord, what would you like me to DO next? How shall I DO this? Give me strength to DO it. Could you reveal to me your plan for my life? <so I can move forward without you…>

Can you see a pattern? [Read more…]

Go down to the end of our street then take a left. Take the third right and keep going until you reach Linden.

I made this 1.12 mile walk every Wednesday night and Sunday morning starting when I was 10-years-old.  That 30 minute walk was the difference between my parents and I…  and it was the glue that held my faith together.

What made me want to go to church so bad I would take myself? That’s easy. Her name was Evelyn and she once lived across the street from my childhood home. [Read more…]

Julie Ann Knight was a sweet-natured, compassionate young woman with a solid sense of humor and an unsophisticated understanding of God. Although her understanding of her Heavenly Father was simple, it was pure and innocent and she loved Him very much.

Julie Ann Knight was my mother. And she was beautiful. She had a heart of gold and she laughed so much it was contagious.  She didn’t have a great childhood, being raised mostly by a single mother who worked long days to make ends meet. While her mother loved her deeply, she wasn’t one for emotional moments or affection unless there was a reason, which was how she was raised. (Call it generational, if you will.) But Julie, she was as affectionate as a puppy. She longed for people to love her and like her. I tend to take after her in this regard.

Julie was easily liked, and she found out later in life that would get her into trouble. My mother found herself pregnant in the summer of 1982 and quickly made the assumption she wasn’t ready to be a mother or able to provide for a baby. Julie, pressured by her internal struggle and people in her life, came to the conclusion to have an abortion. [Read more…]

“We’re moving WHERE??” The words stumbled out of my mouth before I could stop them, almost immediately followed by the tears I was fighting with everything in me to hold back.

My husband had walked in the door and in the time it would have taken him to say, “Hi Baby, I’m home,” and tell me about his day, he announced that he had received orders to PCS. For those who aren’t part of the military community, PCS stands for Permanent Change of Station. In other words: *home* is no longer *here* and we’d better start packing.

I’d known it was coming. We’d been at his current duty station for over 4 years, and it was definitely time. Truth be told, it wasn’t the moving that bothered me. It was where. We had been told so many possibilities in the months leading up to this moment, all of which I had thoroughly researched and mentally prepared for, but then, in true Army fashion, he came home with the news that we were going somewhere completely unforeseen. Honestly,  I was a little shell-shocked. I had done plenty of planning for all the known possibilities. I wasn’t prepared for the unexpected. [Read more…]

Here we are – 2016 has begun!

I could happily write a blog about Christmas cheer and ambitious New Year resolutions.  I could talk about all my hopes and diet plans for the year ahead.  I want to write about those things.  But God has something else in mind for our time together today….

On Christmas Eve, after the cheerful day was winding down, my husband and I began reflecting on a rather deep question.  “What does the state of our world look like to someone who has not entered into a committed relationship with Jesus Christ?”  Whoa.  That’s heavy.  We tried to look objectively at the facts that fill our Facebook newsfeeds and nightly television broadcasts.  The world is riddled with brokenness, heartbreak, bondage, and disease.  We see parents behaving like children, and children being forced to grow up too fast.  We hear of murder in our neighborhoods, our schools, our churches.  We see people being persecuted and refugees fleeing in fear for their lives.  We watch as this happens around us and debate about who or what to blame.  Lessened morals result in stricter laws, and we continue to move towards political correctness with good intention to love our neighbors as ourselves.  [Read more…]

I’ve been struggling a lot with time crunches and stress this month, which is disappointing. This month was supposed to be set aside for calm. I had plans to shop for my loved ones slowly and with intention. I was going to sit at my kitchen table with tea and watch the rain. I was going to read short Christmas devotionals to my kids every night leading up to the 25th. I even took time off work to enjoy the season.

Has any of that happened?

Ha! Replace “slow” with “rushed.” Replace “tea” with “3rd cup of coffee.” Take out “read short devotionals” to “try to get a bath in once a week.” Did work leave me alone? Nope—last minute deadlines that my smooth-talkin’ boss talked me in to are piled on my desk. [Read more…]

I watched aid workers receive refugees on the shores of a dark, icy sea.  Huge, hot, tears streamed down my cheeks as I took the scene into my heart. Tears of joy, tears of sorrow.

Many worked to wrap blankets around the injured, the cold, the very young and the very old. Mothers and fathers with resigned brown eyes fed their children, drank water, gathered them up after a rest and walked out. What compelled them to move away from rest so quickly?

Terror. People who know there is a difference between leaving and escaping move with haste. When a million miles is not enough distance between you and evil that hunts you, haunts you—you keep moving.

On my knees, I sought God’s will for our part in his plan to rescue them. [Read more…]

Last week, I met with one of my friends. We met eight years ago at our last duty station. It is great to be stationed together again and to reconnect. One of the great things about our friendship is that our children are the same age and they love playing together. While this season of reconnection has been great, it is coming to an end as they are moving to another continent in a few weeks.

You might think, “And? So you’ll stay in touch with all the great social media forums out there”. That might be true, but for me it is hard to stay connected that way, since my love language is quality time and physical touch (from the book The Five Love Languages by Gary D. Chapman). I always miss the one-on-one time, as well as the hugs.

In my life coaching business, I discovered that one area many of my clients feel the most stuck in, besides balancing their life, is friendships/relationships. Some of us get hurt or burned by our friends to the point that it is really hard to make new friendships. Or others are longing so much to be loved and accepted by others that they forget to protect their hearts against false friendships. [Read more…]

By Sunday night, I was a wreck. I curled up into a ball on my side of the bed and stared at the wall, contemplating life’s meaninglessness and ultimate inevitably. Tears ran down my cheeks as I tried (unsuccessfully) to quiet the deep snortles coming from my tantrum-caused stuffy nose. Dust in the Wind played monotonously in my head… “all we are is dust in the wiiiinnnddd….” and I nodded. How right you are, Kansas, how right you are.

My husband came in and lightly touched my shoulder, startling me out of my pout-fest with Kansas. He asked me if I needed a hug. I venomously snarked that a hug wouldn’t solve my despair! Wouldn’t give me purpose! Wouldn’t stop my one-way ticket to becoming dust in the wind! He put his hands up as surrender and slowly backed out of the room. [Read more…]
