Why we need “Those” Days

Some days turn into “those days.”

Last week, a “some day” turned into one of “those” days for me.

Our dear (rambunctious and fearless) son had his first trip to the emergency room due to falling and hitting his head on the stone fence in the backyard. I knew it was only a matter of time, but still… you can’t really prepare for something like that.

I would love to tell you that I dealt with it peacefully and gracefully, that I was kind and gracious to the kindergartener who was also in tow (and decided that particular day was “National Day of Disobedience and Backtalk.”)

But last I checked, being a Jesus follower who lies is not encouraged.

I was stressed and I was frazzled (especially after the urgent care doc wigged out, said it was “severe” and needed a referral to ER, legit sutures and sedation(?!?)) My tongue was a lot sharper than I wanted it to be.

And honestly, I was really frustrated that MY plans for the day were all thrown out of whack, especially when the ER referral address had a typo in it and send me driving 20 minutes one way in the wrong direction.

Yes, I know that parenting is my greatest calling in this current life season, and of course the health and wellness of my kids are a priority, but it doesn’t make “those days” any easier.

But do you know what? Malick is fine (thank you Jesus… he only needed glue and steri-strips, no sutures or sedation), and we made it through.

God’s mercies really ARE new every morning. His grace really DOES cover us. His power IS made perfect in our weakness. And sometimes, we just need on of “those days” to remind us of His eternal truths.

 

 

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.'” ~Lamentations 3:22-24

Get Real with all things False

Yesterday was quite the “special” day.

Notice how I put “special” in quotes… Because that is my 38-week pregnancy sarcasm shining through.

Now, this isn’t a pregnancy blog by a long shot, but that IS my current season of life. And as we have established over the last few years, God has a way of speaking to us in our everyday moments– the good, the bad, and the painful.

Long story probably still long: Yesterday, we spent some quality time in the hospital, per midwife’s orders, because I was having legit, organized, consistent and painful contractions.

We are talking like several consistent hours of contractions, 3-4 minutes apart and 90+ seconds in duration.

It totally looked like the real deal… We were excited (and sort of relieved) that Baby-go-time was potentially up on us. The bags were in the car, we were ready to make things happen.  [Read more…]

Recap: OneWord 2016 (TRUTH)

2016 has been… well… interesting.

That is really the best word I can come up with to describe it, at least for our family. It hasn’t been bad, it hasn’t been great, it’s just been… Interesting. Or maybe intense. You know. Like camping. (Get it? In-tents? Pretty sure I’ve used that pun/joke on here before.)

There’s been some hard moments, some joyous moments, and A LOT of moments that involved initial confusion then subsequent personal growth.

I love almost everything about the Pacific Northwest.

I love the food. The culture. The diversity. The people. The massive amounts of things to do, both indoors and out. And yes, I even love tolerate the rain.

The absolute only downfall of living in a suburb of a suburb of a suburb of Seattle is the traffic.

Seriously. I nearly schedule my life around it. You won’t find me going off post anytime between 3:30-6pm on a weekday (especially Fridays) unless something is on fire. I plan my tour-guide tendencies for out-of-town guests around traffic.

Driving on Interstate 5 during rush hour illuminates how solid of a Christian I am. Slow to anger? Kind? Patient?

Practicing What We Preach: Do Not Judge

Sometimes I really surprise myself… and not in a good way.

I am a Christian, have been for several years, writing about Jesus, walking with Jesus, working for Jesus…

But I still struggle not to judge like Jesus tells me to.

It’s disgusting, but as we work through this “Practicing what we Preach” series, authenticity is the only way to go about it.

A Walk Through The Parables: The Two Sons

A Walk through the parablesAs a Christian, I sometimes feel like I have multiple personalities.

But in all actuality, those alleged split personalities are really just the yucky places in my heart (see also: sin) that are constantly at war with my call to be like Christ.

It’s exhausting, I tell you.

If we are honest with ourselves, there is probably a little bit of hypocrite in all of us. We say one thing and do another. What Marriage Is Not

I recently heard a commercial on our local Christian radio station that got me pretty fired up.

It was the founder of E-Harmony, the online matchmaking website. Now, I have nothing against online dating and whatnot– God can use a variety of avenues to bring a man and woman together in marriage. But during the commercial, this dude said something that made me sigh, raise my eyebrows and get a little twitchy.

To paraphrase his statement, he said something along the lines that “the decision of who you marry will have the biggest impact on how happy you will be in life.”
