The Difference between Grilling Steak & Working for Jesus

In college, I took a Meat Science class. (Don’t freak out… I was an animal science major at Kansas State…)

I learned a lot of interesting things in that class, most of which I have (unfortunately) not retained long term. HOWEVER, there is one statement from our rather feisty-old-man-professor Dr. Hunt that I will never forget.

We were talking about the different “doneness” of meat, specifically steak. He told us this, which has since stuck in my brain for nearly a decade: [Read more…]

Deep in my heart of hearts, I have always wanted to be artsy.

Some might say that writing falls in that category, but that’s not the kind of artsy I mean. (Don’t get me wrong. I am VERY grateful for this ability to write semi-ok-ish.)

But I wanted to create beautiful things. Like pretty art that I could hang around my house.

I always say I am resourceful crafty, but not classy crafty.  [Read more…]

Courageous Faith: REST

My face is red. My hands are shaking. My stomach hurts. Suddenly, my right eye literally starts to twitch.

I slam down my fork on the table.

“THAT’S IT! I. AM. TAKING. A. NAP.”

My husband calmly looks at me and lovingly responds, “Good. Enjoy your time. Take as long as you need.”

Well. THAT didn’t have the intended effect. But whatever. Bedtime for mama.

I used to think that rest was a sign of weakness. C’mon, I should be able to go on forever, right? Jesus will help me get there. Rest is for sissies. I am strong. I am not a coward.  [Read more…]

I am not a fun-hater. Really I am not. But sometimes, you might think that.

Not because I deliberately avoid fun, but because I am a professional excuse-maker and rarely go in search of fun.

But this year, with my OneWord REST in full force, that is all changing.

Check out today’s hilarious (and rather informal) video blog about my quest for rest– and a more joy-full, fun life.

BTW: This video blog features a special guest appearance by a very special person, who happens to have blond hair, a dirty face and loves the great outdoors. [Read more…]

When your Game Face is Tired

Fact: I am not the Energizer Bunny.

If I had my way, I would be– the person that just keeps going and going and going… But ’round these parts, I am all about being authentic. So endless spiritual energy is not a thing for me.

And I think if we are honest with ourselves, we will agree to this truth: Even the strongest Christians’ game faces occasionally get tired.

On any given day, at least one of my regular game faces is a little bit weary: my army wife game face, my mama game face, my minister game face, my fitness game face. [Read more…]

In all my years of being a grown-up, I have minimal experience with buying “real” and “new” furniture.

Let me explain.

Right out of college, I bought a lot of new “furniture” but it didn’t fall into the “real” category. It was all particle board. (Think: Ramen noodle budget.) Nothing against the lower-quality furniture, but I purchased it with the intention that it would undoubtedly someday be replaced.

Which is true. Six years and three moves later, all that remain are a very wobbly bookshelf that will meet its demise on our next move and a very simple desk in the office.

All of our other furniture is purchased second-hand or given to us by very generous friends/family.

Which is why my recent purchase of a BRAND NEW HIGH-QUALITY recliner for our living room was kind of a big deal. [Read more…]

Fishing in Calm Waters #EverydayJesus

I love water.

Specifically, bodies of water. Maybe it is because living in Kansas I didn’t grow up around much water. Or my affinity for exploring the life teeming beneath the surface. Or perhaps I just really like eating fish.

Either way, it is on my bucket list that sometime in the next 20-70 years we shall live by a body of water and own a small boat. (Oh. And ice fishing. Never been– need to go.)

When I was a teenager, I had the opportunity to live in work in Minnesota for two summers. The Land of 10,000 Lakes? Uh, yes please.

I worked on a hog farm (that’s a story for another time) and lived with my Uncle Billy and Aunt Cindy. Uncle Billy was a professional fun-haver. Although our hog farm work schedule was quite demanding for my teenage self, Billy always made sure to fill our off hours with adventures. [Read more…]

True Rest

When I first started blogging nearly four years ago (WHAT?!? 4 years already!?) I really didn’t know what I was getting into.

I thought I would just be sharing a few Jesus-y thoughts and encouraging others.

Which I do. And for that I am grateful. But this online ministry gig is so much more.

See friends, it is a ministry to myself.

Not only do reading my words at a later date realign my heart focus and challenge me to find Jesus in my everyday, but I have also met some incredible friends here. [Read more…]

Holding tight to Slimy Toddlers & Peace

My two-year-old daughter loves to play games. And unfortunately for this mama-with-places-to-be-at-a-certain-time, that game is not something calm, cooperative and peaceful.

My girl loves to be chased.

I blame her Daddy. Because yeah, it is super fun to play “Chase around the table in our pajamas” when we have nowhere to be on a Saturday morning. Her peals of laughter make it almost worth it.

Almost. [Read more…]

Our Spiritual Temper Tantrums #EverydayJesus

My daughter, being the apparent (hereditary) overachiever that she is, hit the Terrible Twos early.

Several months before her second birthday, it was like a switch was flipped and she learned the power of a tantrum.

We went from moderately peaceful breakfasts to complete, total, utter meltdowns because she wanted a different color of cheese. (Like I am supposed to know THAT?)

In all honesty, her tantrums really aren’t terrible… But if you ever stop by during one of these meltdowns, you will probably witness me talking to the ceiling, sighing heavily, rolling my eyes and muttering something like, “Lord in heaven… Are you serious right now?”  [Read more…]
