If You are Gonna Run In Texas…

Over the last seven (!?!?) years since answering the call to ministry, the Lord has taught me many life lessons, from being less “flakey” (literally) with my faith, to seeking Jesus in my Everyday.

This last year, He has really been teaching me a lot of things in the health, food and fitness realm. Recently, I learned that yes, if you are gonna run in Texas, do it before it gets to hot… Or you won’t just be running to bring Jesus glory, you will be running and feel like you are going to meet him too (and I don’t mean in a “good” way like on-the-road-to-Damascus-life-changing kind of way… More like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego furnace kind of way.)

So here are a few reflections on my way-too-late-start-4-mile run from a while back.

 1. West Texas is beautiful.
2. But SO hot.
3. This run would have been completely glorious if I was able to start three hours earlier.
4. But I have Tiny Humans.
5. Left side pic is before, feeling like a happy, sparkling ray of Texas Sunshine. Right pic is after, so grateful to be off the Hot Mess Express and back in the air conditioning of the car.
6. The first half of the run was so wonderful.
7. Because, as I realized on my way back to the car, going out was downhill.
8. I need to start running with a full camelbak of water because the piddly bottles on my running belt are not enough.
9. El Paso makes me appreciate even lukewarm water to drink. (It was ice cold when I started).
10. I’ve never been more thankful for mountain breeze.
11. Apparently, I was visually struggling the last quarter mile because a random stranger saw me checking my running watch and said “Parking lot is right there. You are almost done!”
12. It was still a great run and so glad I went.
13. Now, to shower. Because I think I smell…

So now you might be saying, “Cool story, bro.” What’s all this have to do with following Jesus.

Well, I am SO glad you asked.

1.  Following Jesus can be a simultaneously wonderful yet hard, exhausting experience. I think many believers are convinced that when they say YES to the Lord, that their life will automatically be sunshine, rainbows and puppy dog tails. But looking at accounts throughout the Bible, that’s not true.

2. It will sometimes feel like it’s all uphill work.

3. You might sweat… Physically, emotionally, spiritually.

4. But every step is purposeful.

5. It’s not always going to be pretty. I shared the before/after picture of my run so people don’t think I’m one of those always-put-together runners with lipstick and a glittery hat (although research indicates that glitter/fun lips makes a person run faster. And by research, I mean my personal opinion that has no scientific basis whatsoever). Authentic faith is real and can get a little messy.

6. It’s encouraged to always start sooner than later.

7. After fighting the good fight of faith and making it to the end of our journey, there is SUCH victory! Of course, I write this on faith and spiritual speculation, but considering how great sitting down in the air conditioning feels post Texas run, I’m sure crossing the threshold to heaven and hearing “Well done, my good and faithful servant” is simply no comparison!

So keep running, my friends. Even if your steps are heavy and you have slowed to what feels like barely more than a crawl. Keep going, even if you cannot yet see the finish line.

Christ will empower you and carry you. He will refresh you as the Living Water. He will give you rest. Keep moving forward toward Him, because his love is cooler than the Texas temperature and wider than the Texas landscape.

“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” ~1 Corinthians 9:24-25

Hold On to Your Joy! #WilcoWednesday

7 Days Time

Welcome to Wilco Wednesday! If you are a new around these parts, “Wilco” is Army-speak for “Will Comply.” Think of it as saying “Roger, God. Got it. Will do.”  So that is what Wednesday here at 7 Days Time is all about– exploring his decrees and seeking guidance for what complying with Him looks like in everyday life. The best part? He loves us for who we are, not what we do.  Remember: He doesn’t want perfection, just obedience. Share. Enjoy. Interact. Welcome a very Godly, loving woman, my friend Bobbie.

“Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, you righteous; sing, all you who are upright in heart!”               ~Psalm 32:11

It is quite natural for us to be moved and influenced by what goes on around us.  When someone is sad, we want to be sensitive, compassionate and supportive.  We might naturally suppress our exuberance over something great going on in one’s own life.  If we learn that a friend’s lost item (wallet, phone, keys, military ID) is recovered, even if we are struggling with hard things, we freely enter into the joy of that person.  Paul says in Romans 12:15, “Rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn.” [Read more…]

“God is moved by us.  When He signed up for love, He signed up for pain.”  ~Beth Moore

Remember as a child what it meant to “pinkie promise” or to agree with our lips with fingers crossed behind our backs? Some of us find it difficult to outgrow that practice.  It may not be that easy for us in relationships to keep our commitments or to love another unconditionally and forever.  In relationships with siblings, parents, relatives, friends, husbands, even adult children – we have made promises, but what happens when the thrill or ease of our “I promise” fades?  [Read more…]

Web of Perseverance

A few months ago, Husband, Tiny Human and I returned from a cross-country trip.

It was something of a debacle. What should have taken like 8 hours to get from New Jersey back to Washington State took more than 36.

Needless to say– I was frustrated.

But I was also rather surprised, because even with hours of delays, missed flights and the fact that I was literally wearing my last pair of clean underwear from my carry-on, I managed not to freak out on my husband. (I know it wasn’t his fault. But the poor man is often on the receiving end of my frustrations for all the things. I am working on this… Claiming a victory in that moment.)

Anywho, I was tired. Hangry (Hungry + angry.) Ready to get home. [Read more…]

Too Close to See the Fruit

Sometimes reminiscing is one of my favorite things to do.

Especially on days when the present is just a little much for my heart/brain/everything to handle.

I loved the days when we were young, growing up in rural Kansas. The days when my biggest worry was how angry Mom was going to get from our muddy clothes or if a horse drinking a bucket of tadpoles was actually dangerous.

Those were the days.

As I recently sat pondering about my current roles involving marriage, motherhood and ministry, my mind drifted back to another of our favorite past times.

Climbing trees. [Read more…]

Not a Show Stopper

I am a recovering Chicken Little.

No, I don’t have issues with feather tendencies or a waning poultry aversion. But up until the last few months, I have been living quite a Chicken Little life.

Everything in my world was very dramatic. Not like “OMG-No-You-Didn’t” dramatic, but “Oh-plans-have-changed-the-sky-is-falling-we-are-all-gonna-die!” Something like that. [Read more…]

Courageous Faith: Strength

I always know that moment is coming, but yet it still surprises me when it shows up.

Sweat is running down my nose. I glance at the clock and wonder how much longer. My heart pounds. My muscles quiver.

It is the point of “almost done” in a super intense work out.

On my good days, I ask myself just how far I can go.

On my not-so-good days, I am glad that I went.  [Read more…]

Fact: I am not the Energizer Bunny.

If I had my way, I would be– the person that just keeps going and going and going… But ’round these parts, I am all about being authentic. So endless spiritual energy is not a thing for me.

And I think if we are honest with ourselves, we will agree to this truth: Even the strongest Christians’ game faces occasionally get tired.

On any given day, at least one of my regular game faces is a little bit weary: my army wife game face, my mama game face, my minister game face, my fitness game face. [Read more…]

I am a dreamer.

Not la-dee-da-head-in-the-clouds unfocused dreamer, but a dreamer that loves envisioning new milestones in life and accomplishing goals.

I love the feeling of flying high when I reach a seemingly impossible dream. You know the feeling. On-top-of-the-world-shout-it-from-the-rooftops kind of joy.

Dreaming is fun. Encouraging. Uplifting. And if our dreams bring glory to God (which most of them should), dreaming is a holy experience.

We might think that when we fall short of our dreams that it is a completely heartbreaking, negative experience.

But believe it or not, not reaching our dreams can also be a holy experience. [Read more…]

Through the Thorns (And Past the Spiders)

This just in…

Life is not easy.

Ok, that statement is far from a breaking story. If you have been on earth for more than 6 minutes, you have probably lived this truth first hand.

We live in a fallen world that involves pain, suffering, unanswered questions, and some downright sorrowful moments.

But here’s the thing: Although we live in a messy, gross, sinful world, it is GOD’S world. And His world is what I like to call a Romans 8:28 world.

“God works all things for good for those who love him and are called according to His purpose.” [Read more…]
