The Broken Leg

As of this writing, my husband has been a soldier in the United States Army Infantry for just shy of 13 years.

Of those 13 years, he has endured three combat deployments totaling 45 months, as well as numerous other intense and potentially dangerous missions/assignments.

We count ourselves incredibly blessed that the Lord has protected him from injury all that time. Because we have many, many friends and battle buddies that cannot say the same.

Well, about a week and a half ago, that injury-free dynamic changed a bit in our family.

Long story short: My husband recently fractured his fibula (the small bone in his leg) when he landed after executing a required jump into Florida with his current job as a Ranger Instructor.

Let’s just say that this turn of events was NOT part of our no-plan-plan. (But are things like this ever on our radar?)  [Read more…]

Hurry Up and Wait– And how to deal (Well, kinda)

“Hurry up and wait is my favorite part of army wife life,” said no milspouse ever.

Ain’t THAT the truth?!?

My family is currently in yet (another!) hurry up and wait season. And it is about as much fun as talking on the phone to Tricare while shopping at the commissary on payday.

Gag. Me. With. A. Spoon.

See, we are right on the cusp of a PCS. Unlike some of our previous PCS’s, this one is gonna be kind of hard on our heart. Other duty stations, it was “time” to go and we were ready. Deuces, let’s roll America!

But this time, I can’t help but wonder how much housing is going to charge us for the fingernail claw marks I likely will leave on the front porch as my husband drags me to the car on departure day. #KiddingNotKidding [Read more…]

Worth Waiting For

You might have noticed that in this current season,  Wednesdays are my days to work toward some super-awesome God-sized dreams. So here is a blast from the past straight from the archives. Enjoy, dear friends… and thanks for the grace.

Tick…………….

                           Tock…………..

                                                   Tick…………….

Waiting. UG. It ranks right up there with “Going to the Dentist” and “Cleaning the Bathroom” on my list of Fun Things to Do. But waiting is SUCH a big part of our world, whether you are waiting for them to call your number at the DMV or waiting for God to give you an answer on what you are supposed to do. [Read more…]

Hidden Ah-Ha’s: Stay with God~Don’t Quit.

Henry Blackaby said “Waiting is one of the hardest yet most important things we will ever do as Christians.”

I, personally, think that’s an understatement.

Think to yourself about how much time you spend waiting…

Waiting for the traffic light to turn green…

Waiting for the microwave to beep so you can enjoy those delicious leftovers…  [Read more…]

Fast. Cheap. Quality. Pick Two.

Let’s be honest… we are all kind of spoiled.

Now before you get all persnickety, let me explain. If you are reading this from a computer or an iPhone or some kind of technical device (yes, even if it is at work) you are sitting pretty good. If you are reading this from a place that has heat (or air conditioning, depending upon which hemisphere you reside in), you are pretty well off. And hey– I’m no exception– I’m writing this in my “comfy clothes” in my recliner, cuddling with our pup, heater running in a warm, dry house on my computer.

I think I’m doing alright. [Read more…]

Final Answer… Finally!

Are you good at waiting?

I don’t mean waiting tables… I’m talking bout the waiting that requires patience. Perseverance. Persistence.

Honestly, it’s not my forte.

I remember the days of my youth that I would spend WAITING for an answer– perhaps from my parents about attending a sleepover… or an answer from a scholarship committee… or a grade to come back on a test.

Waiting was painful. I would say that it was the equivalent to watching paint dry or grass grow– but at least those activities I had a general idea of what the outcome would be. [Read more…]

Jesus, Marriage, & Hamburger Helper

Ahhh, marriage… Tis so much more than that beautiful white dress, the romance of a honeymoon and those sweet moments of snuggling on the couch.

Marriage also includes challenges, growth, conflict, and on days when all of those things are present, sometimes hamburger helper for supper. [Read more…]

P.A.R.K it!

(Insert obnoxious/festive cell phone ring here)

“Hey beloved! How are ya? When will you be home tonight?  Oh… So… You won’t be coming home at all? A private did WHAT?!? Sigh… (Gulp.) Ok, honey. Yeah, I miss you too… Love you… See you when I see you.”

As a drill sergeant spouse, this phone (and/or text) conversation happens more often than I would like.

In life, things happen. Plans change. Circumstances shift.  This doesn’t just apply to drill sergeant spouses. All of us are faced with life experiences that shake up our daily plans, from changes of schedule to a flat tire to a kid who just won’t take a nap.

We ALL have a choice on how to react… And reacting appropriately can be HARD. [Read more…]
