My “Brother” Peter

Oh Peter.

Whenever I read about Apostle Peter’s escapades in the Bible, I can’t help but smile. Mainly because I identify so much with him. In contemporary speak, he would totes be my homeboy. Bro, even.

Why, you ask? Well, one minute he is on fire for the Lord, pledging his allegiance and swearing he will follow him no matter what, even to death… Then a few hours later Peter has denied Jesus three times before the rooster crowed. [Read more…]

Lessons and Laughter in Pregnancy

Here at 7 Days Time, I’m all about finding lessons and laugher buried in our everyday experiences.

And while I am not pregnant “every day” of my life (Thank goodness!) it’s been my “everyday” experience for almost the last 10 months. (Did you know that a woman is “technically” pregnant for 10 months, not just 9? #WebOfLies #WhoKnew)  [Read more…]

10 Commandments of Pregnancy: For the Pregnant Mamas

The last few weeks we’ve been talking (joking?) about all things pregnancy, of course with a faith-based twist.

We mentioned 10 Commandments of Pregnancy for the General Public, and then for the Husbands. But as a second time mama, I was feeling a bit left out. So I want to revisit a one more preggo set of commandments… For the Pregnant Mamas.

The Holy (and not-so-holy) thoughts of a Marathon runner #EverydayJesus

Welcome to another week of our Everyday Jesus link-up. Be sure to link-up below this post, comment on your neighbor’s blog and share with your friends… Because Jesus is everywhere, every day!

As you might know, I recently ran my first ever marathon.

And it is my tradition to share some of my mile-by-mile thoughts, because I think of Jesus most miles and I think of some pretty crazy stuff… But it is too good to just waste on a Facebook status.

Plus, we all need a good laugh, right?

So, per request, here is a breakdown and the nitty-gritty (rainy? painful?) details from my first-ever full marathon experience during the Columbia Gorge Marathon on 10.25.15… Enjoy! [Read more…]

Discernment: Let’s Learn It #WilcoWednesday

Welcome to Wilco Wednesday! If you are a new around these parts, “Wilco” is Army-speak for “Will Comply.” Think of it as saying “Roger, God. Got it. Will do.”  So that is what Wednesday here at 7 Days Time is all about– exploring his decrees and seeking guidance for what complying with Him looks like in everyday life. The best part? He loves us for who we are, not what we do.  Remember: He doesn’t want perfection, just obedience. Share. Enjoy. Interact. And let’s respond to God’s call with  a hearty “Wilco, Lord!”  Welcome today my hilarious and super smart friend Lindsey as she shares some great real-life faith tips.

I used to teach middle school language arts and social studies. One of the main goals I had for my students was that they become critical thinkers. Because our educational system is severely messed up, critical thinking has been shoved to the side in place of tests and academic scores. But, I digress. I waded backwards through the typical teaching structure because I believe that critical thinking is important to life.

I taught my students to understand logical fallacies. We would dissect news articles, ads, and blog posts. I made them ask me why, and in turn, I would ask them why as well. Even though it sounds like I was trying to teach my students to be obstinate, authority rebelling stinkers, I was not (plus, I knew that they would learn to do that on their own—with or without my lessons). I was attempting to teach my students the value of logical reasoning, something that would pack a more useful life punch than comparing the book and movie versions of Lord of the Flies. [Read more…]

Practicing what we Preach: Grace

It was a typical night.

Baby girl and I had completed the day, successfully avoiding major tear-filled meltdowns (from either one of us.)

Hubs came home after his normal 12+ hours of doing army-ish things. Supper was consumed. And then the debate began.

We were both tired from the day (ok, life in general) and we started negotiating on who would give Tiny Human a bath. She was sticky all over and had somehow managed to get smashed blueberry in her hair– and stuck on her forehead.

We recently changed her nightly routine from supper, play, bath, bedtime to supper, bath, play, bedtime. It seemed to be working and I am a huge proponent of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

But Brandon agreed to give her a bath *if* he could do it right before bedtime.

Exhausted, I agreed. Anything to keep the peace, right?

Well. [Read more…]

Country Running & Faith Lessons

You might recall that 2014 is the Year of the Runner for this formerly anti-running chick.

I have learned that there are many, many lessons to be learned in this running journey– many of which relate directly to faith.

About a month ago, I was blessed to spend some quality time back home with my family in Kansas. Just because I was on “vacation” didn’t mean God released me to sit on my duff for those few weeks. Nope, I had to keep hitting the pavement… Er, I mean gravel.

It was the first time ever in my life doing some literal cross-country running on dusty (and sometimes muddy) roads. Miles and miles just me, God, and the sneaky rocks trying to trip me up. [Read more…]

A Walk Through the Parables

When I was growing up, I loved stories with a moral.

I remember story time at the library was always the highlight of my week. My sister and I would listen to records (yes, real records) on the record player downstairs while Mom worked or sowed. Nearly all of the stories we hear whether read to us at the library or in over that record player in the Northwest Kansas basement were packed with adventure– and a great moral of how to live (or not to live) life.

Now as an adult, I still love a good story with a solid take-home truth.

Which allows me the opportunity to introduce a new series, “A Walk through the Parables.”

Crash Course in Apologetics (#EverydayJesus Link-up)

Welcome to another week of our Everyday Jesus link-up. Be sure to link-up below this post, comment on your neighbor’s blog and share with your friends… Because Jesus is everywhere, every day!

My husband is a funny man.

We were chatting one day, talking about life, writing, Jesus, when suddenly he said this:

“You know, Sharita… Even though you went to seminary, you should always remember that I am well versed in apologetics because I am always apologizing to you for something ridiculous I have done.”

I laughed for like an hour. (Ok, maybe not an hour, but it was a good hearty laugh which I desperately needed.)

So today, per my husband’s hilarity, we are going to have a crash course in apologetics. [Read more…]

Changing Seasons: Groom, Prune & Bloom

Ahhhh… The seasons are changing and spring is in the air. Trees are budding and flowers are blooming.

Such a promising time of year.

But that promise doesn’t stop with nature. In fact, it applies to all of us, in all locations and seasons of our life.

Don’t believe me? Let me prove it.

Over the last year and half or so, I have been privileged to volunteer as SERVE Ministry Apprentice at Christ Community Church. It has been a time of growth… in more ways than one. [Read more…]
