The Purple People Pleaser

I sure sang some weird songs growing up.

Well, I mean they didn’t SEEM weird at the time. But now as a grown-uppish kind of person, I have started to learn about the “background” info of some childhood tunes.

“London Bridge” is rumored to be about a viking siege, child prisoners or a colossal architectural disaster.

“Ring around the Rosie” is based on a song created about a plague. Yeah. The “ring” was a rash. The “posey” was something an afflicted person carried in their pocket to ward off the symptoms of the disease. And I bet you can figure out what “Ashes, ashes, we all fall down!” was referring to. #UmYikes

Can’t I just be five years old and naive again?

Recently, I was thinking about another song that we sang in elementary music class…  The One-Eyed, One-horned, Flying Purple People Eater.

Did I ever actually LISTEN to the lyrics? How am I not scarred for life?

Admittedly, this song was meant to be silly and light-hearted. But the insinuation of eating humans seems like something of a nightmare.

And for some reason, I realized with just a slight name-tweak of that “monster,” I get a result that scares me even now as an adult.

Carded by Christ

I use it everywhere.

At the grocery store. Getting gas. Picking up my kiddo from daycare. Driving to my house. Going to the doctor. Paying my bills. Snagging that new bargain at our thrift store. Checking out a library book.

My military spouse ID is nearly the key to my very existence (or at least productivity) in my day-to-day function as an army wife. [Read more…]

Who I Am

Happy September, all!

Oh, and Happy Labor Day.

So, here’s the deal. I’m just gonna be straight up with you today. (Actually, I hope I am ALWAYS straight up with you… but today might be straighter than normal. Ha.)

At the beginning of a new month, typically I update you all on my SMART goals for 2012. I’ve been working on this list since January, and asked you to be my accountability partner. [Read more…]

Can I See Your I.D.? (Five Minute Friday)

Alas, loyal followers… another Friday tis upon us! (Not quite sure why I am talking like that…)

Ahem. Check. Check. Ah. Ok, that’s better.

Anywho… It’s Friday. And Friday means that I link up with The Gypsy Mama for Five Minute Friday. She gives us a prompt, then we engage in what I like to call a finger sprint. We write for five minutes flat, no over thinking, no editing. Just write. We let the words flow and see where we go. (Look at me rhyming on a Friday.)

Sorry bout the squirrelly behavior. I need to cut back on the caffeine I guess.

I should probably get started before I embarrass myself. (More than I already have.)

Todays prompt: IDENTITY

Embrace your Inner Brahma

Being unique is awesome.

You might have already picked up on the fact that I personally am a little, um, “different” than most. Ok, maybe even weird. Perhaps odd is a good word? How about eclectic? I don’t know a whole lot of small-town southeast Kansas girls who graduated with an animal science degree that now work at a church only after becoming a certified auctioneer and graduating citizen’s police academy just because. RANDOM.   I  say this to point out that while yes, my personality is sometimes a little bizarre, it really makes for a good time (not to mention some great conversation pieces.) [Read more…]

Mistaken Identity

Who am I?

This is a question I have pondered all my life. Some days the answer seems rather clear, other times I got nothing.  Somedays I feel as if I am 27 different people. I have always heard about having your identity in Christ. I honestly assumed that I did. But truly, I didn’t know what it meant until this last Sunday in church. I watched our healthy church support and love on a church leader who had to suddenly step down from his position in order to redefine his identity in Christ. It was an incredible act of obedience and courage. Amazing. [Read more…]
