Army of God: “Voluntold”

When one gets involved with the army, there is A LOT to learn.

It doesn’t matter if you are actually joining the ranks as enlisted or officer, OR you have been called to marry a beloved soldier… There is going to be a learning curve involved.

Early on in our marriage (ok, let’s be honest, it’s still pretty early… we are only 14 months in) I had to stop Brandon every other sentence and have him translate the gobbledygook that he was trying to communicate.  Even now, I have to put the words through a filter in my army wife head to understand them. We have… A Power Shortage

The house was pitch black. Dad woke me for school, but I was less than excited to get out of bed… Our house was freezing! It was a the winter of my sophomore year of high school… and after experiencing an ice storm that produced over three inches of ice the previous week, we were going on day ten without power. Pitch black. Cold. Awesome.

I stumbled out of bed and quickly pulled on my costume. Yes, I said costume. I was part of the one-act play “Anybody for Tea” and had to be dressed and ready to perform upon arrival at school. My character was an old quirky woman, so apparently I played the part well… I pulled on my fuzzy socks, grabbed some breakfast and ran out the door. [Read more…]

The Perfect Cheer

Sometimes you just gotta have FUN.

This past Saturday, we had the opportunity to host our 2nd Annual Christ Community Church SERVE Banquet. It was a remarkable opportunity for all of us to get together and say THANK YOU to all of our amazing volunteers who serve within our church.

As an added bonus to some great brunch food  served by our staff, our volunteers got another surprise. A chance to laugh. Hysterically.

Kelli (my boss– you remember me mentioning her before– she’s kinda cool) and our admin guru Brad had created a “little skit” for the entertainment AND encouragement for our volunteers. It. Was. Hilarious. [Read more…]

Born to be Wild

Sometimes, you just need to slow down… and laugh.

This week has been surprisingly bonkers for me. What I though was going to be relatively chill since I am on “school break” for a week became working overdrive at home and work. But hey it’s Friday… So why not take a few moments to CHILLAX and laugh?

I am a big fan of animals. In fact, I was planning on being a veterinarian until midway through my junior year of college when I discovered that I work even better with people than I do with animals. (That would have been handy info two chemistry classes and one and half physics classes prior. SIGH) But in my attempt to relax and enjoy what I hope to be a calm(er) Friday, I wanted to briefly share with you some “animal fun.” [Read more…]

A Banjo and a Bible

I love going back to my roots.

I am a country girl and proud of it. I grew up loving agriculture, nurturing baby calves (and various other creatures) on our back porch and still get a little thrill from putting on my cowgirl boots that I got at the American Royal five years ago.

Kansas (where I am from) definitely isn’t “The South.” But this weekend, I had a chance to get a little splash of country– only to a much higher degree. [Read more…]

Here’s to Kicking the Bucket… list (Part 1)

If you have ever been engaged in a conversation with me for more than 18 minutes, chances are I have mentioned my “Bucket list.”

I don’t talk about my Bucket List to say “Oooo looky at all the ‘cool’ things I have done.” Because honestly, most of them aren’t cool. They are probably borderline nerdy. But I’ve come to terms with this. My Bucket List is important to me a for a few reasons:

1. I love making lists.

2. God has designed me to be a person who enjoys working towards things and having goals– even if they are nerdy goals.

3. It makes a great conversation piece.

4. Gives me an excuse to do some pretty random stuff.

5. I can revel and thank God for all of the awesome little things in life that make me happy! [Read more…]

Technically Speaking, It’s a Gift

Social media is a HUGE deal right now. Ok, that was kind of an obvious statement– but it  needed to be made for the purpose of this post. To prove my point, I would bet that most of you out there in cyber-land probably found out about this blog via Facebook or Twitter. (Thanks, internet.) [Read more…]

A Simple Gift… That means so much!

We have been talking about gifts lately.

Gifts can come in many, many forms from that engagement ring promising a lifetime of commitment to that forced smile when we open up a “fashionable” sweater from Grandma. God’s gifts also come in many shapes, sizes and colors…

I ran across the following a few weeks ago when working on a project for church and was reminded of it today. The Lord loved us enough to create laughter and allow us to feel joy in our heart. (That’s a gift) He has also given us GRACE. (There’s another one) Sometimes he combines them. (My favorite gift! ) [Read more…]

Back to School Bonus

Our dog Sweet Justus loves elementary school days.

I am not talking about MY school days– because for me, working on my masters online, everyday is a school day– and I don’t have to go anywhere. (Praise Jesus!) But Justus loves little kid school days. Brandon and I obviously don’t have kids of our own yet, but  there are passels (flocks? gaggles?) of small little school children all throughout our neighborhood. Fortunately for our lil baby dog, we usually time our morning walk-jogs just right for the kids to be waiting at the multiple bus stops to head to school. [Read more…]

The Best Medicine

I love to laugh. It doesn’t matter what kind of laugh– a small chuckle, a loud obnoxious snort, or a stomach-shaking-ribs-hurting-can’t-breath-tears-rolling all out hoot. It is such a release.

I’ve mentioned it  before, but there are a lot of things in this world that I have to ponder/laugh about. Sure, I could choose to be upset and frustrated at things I don’t understand, but instead I decide to just chalk it up to the “Only God Knows” category. I really do have a list of things to ask God when I get to heaven. Yes, some are very deep and theological, but I have been reflecting the last couple of days on  things of a lighter nature. I really believe that God has an incredible sense of humor– like what is the deal with Mondays? Or the platypus? And what is the purpose of the University of Kansas Jayhawks? (Just kidding. But seriously…) [Read more…]
