A Walk Through The Parables: The Tenants

Sometimes stories in the Bible make me grimace.

Not because I have a weak stomach but because this following Jesus business is dang serious.

There is a lot at stake and I am constantly asking God to do a “heart-check” to make sure my pulse still beats for Him… Because let’s be honest, it is crazy easy to get distracted in our world full of “bright and shiny” instant gratification teasers.

Which is what today’s parable is all about… Brace yourself. It’s about to get real all up in here as we dig into the Parable of the Tenants, found in Matthew 21:33-46 and Mark 12:1-12.

A Walk through the Parables: Lost is Found!

Lost and Found - Laura Johns

I like to think that I am a gal that has it pretty together. Ish.

I keep my task list nearby.  I make a menu each week to keep things organized (and to make grocery shopping a less-harried experience.) I try to stick to a cleaning schedule to keep our house kind of sort of minimally maintained on weekly basis.

If something is lost, usually I know just where to look. Which is really good news, because finding lost items is not my Beloved husband’s forte. (He is usually the one losing stuff… “Hey lover, have you seen my wallet/phone/keys/etc?) [Read more…]

Over the years, I have had my share of broken hearts.

I remember the broken hearts of goals or experiences that I had worked so hard for not coming true.

I remember the broken hearts of losing those I loved through hard life circumstances.

I remember my first broken heart by a boy. [Read more…]

Pumping Iron with Jesus

Hi friends… For the next several weeks, Wednesdays will be dedicated to re-sharing some of my favorite posts. I am so blessed to be working on some “big rocks” and pretty awesome God-sized dreams, but I need time to make that happen. So after much prayer, here we are. I pray you enjoy these words… And thanks for extending me Christ-like grace. Oh. And everything is still business as usual for our Thursday #EverydayJesus link-up, so don’t miss it!

“Ninety-eight…ninety-nine… one-hundred!”

Oh hey. Didn’t see you there. Sorry, I was just working out… you know, pumping some iron, getting in shape. (Does that sound a little too much like Will Ferrell in Anchorman?)

Obviously, I am not pumping iron… but instead am clicking keys. At a pretty rapid pace, I might add. But I didn’t get to this typing speed overnight. [Read more…]

The Rolling Stones

Fun Fact: The Rolling Stones recorded 437 songs.

That is a lot of blues-ish rock and roll music minutes.

Pretty cool, huh? Now you have something interesting to share tonight at the supper table. [Read more…]

21 Truths: God Saves

When my sister and I were growing up, going to the swimming pool was a pretty big deal.

We lived out in the country our entire lives, so it was anywhere from a 10 to 17 mile drive one way to any public pool. Not incredibly far, but far enough when you weren’t old enough to drive.

I remember the first summer we moved to Southeast Kansas. I was about 11.5 ish years old and my sister had just turned 10. Our Grandma Lacey was in town from Missouri, so she agreed (after much begging and cajoling) to take us to the pool for the afternoon. [Read more…]

21 Truths: God is Always Present

As of this moment, we have not yet had any *serious* issues with separation anxiety with our daughter. (Yet is the key word– I am fully aware this can ambush us at any moment.)

Yes, Charis digs the fact that we are her parents (at least that is what I am telling myself– check back with me when she turns 13) but she isn’t stuck like glue to me unless she is afraid or sick.

Unfortunately, she is currently in a season of not loving the dark.  [Read more…]

If God Wasn’t In Charge (Printable)

A lot of junky, yucky painful things happen in this world.

Perhaps that is why this joint isn’t heaven? (Thankfully!)

But even amid the pain, trial and suffering, we have a great truth to cling to: God is in charge of this whole show. Every tiny moment.

If He wasn’t in charge, I would be scared. But He is in charge, so I’m not worried.

Today, I wanted to share with you a printable with that simple truth. Please feel free to share this with your friends. Just click on the blue PDF link to download, print and display. [Read more…]

Faith & Feelings: Lonely

You Are Not Alone

Photo via David Pacey @ Flickr

As a military wife, battling loneliness sometimes feels like a full-time job. Now, don’t get me wrong– I adore my Beloved husband and certainly support his mission. But when he is away doing said mission, grown-up conversation suddenly becomes a hot commodity.

If I am not careful, the cold fingers of loneliness creep into my heart… And Satan goes to town. Satan LOVES it when we are isolated, away from other believers and under the impression we are legitimately alone.  [Read more…]

Tears in the Dark

It had been such a hard day.

Oh heck, who was I kidding? It had been a hard few weeks. I had been running pretty hard for several days in a row, struggling to fulfill my leadership roles, do ministry and most of all, parent our sweet, anti-sleep teething, feverish 11-month old daughter while my husband was away for two months with the army.

Not only was I physically weary, but emotionally I was tapped out. My heart was heavy from sharing the burdens of life with a few friends in ministry. When bedtime for my daughter rolled around that night, it was the first time I had paused all day.

As I sat there rocking her in the dark, listening to the synthetic raindrop sounds from her white noise machine, I took a deep breath and accessed my heart. [Read more…]
