Halloween is upon us again and with it, cold weather and long sweaters. I love this time of year. I love Halloween and I love dressing up. I love being warmed to the core by hot cider during an especially crisp Autumn day.

Also, I love being “scared” from not-too-spooky stories. Honestly, I am not one for watching truly scary movies anymore. The scariest I can handle is Vincent Price or the cult classics like Dracula, Wolfman, and Frankenstein. (Ok, and Beetlejuice.) Moreover, I believe there are too many truly scary things in this world to find much entertainment in a movie about supernatural stuff and people tearing one another apart.  This fallen world in itself is scary enough as it is!

So, on that note… Let’s talk about FEAR. (I know. Everyone’s favorite subject. Hang with me.) What do I fear? I fear many things, not the least of all on the list is being an ineffective tool for the Lord’s use. [Read more…]

Do You Like Scary Movies?

I have never liked scary movies. Ever.

Maybe you are a theatrical thrill seeker and nothing makes you happier than a racing pulse as you watch a movie from your couch.

You can go ahead and invite me over to your house for a movie night, but just know that I will be in the kitchen raiding your fridge and eating all the popcorn reading a book.

I guess I just don’t understand the excitement of scary movies. Because their level of realism is about zero. “Oh hey, let me  walk into this dark house by myself. Pay no attention to the crescendo of intense music in the background. And is that a trail of blood on the ground? I think I will follow it. Only good things can come from this, right?” [Read more…]

There is a nest outside my window as I touch the stacks of books I’m preparing for bible study. It seems like a good nest. In His Word, I hold hope in my hands, and my heart travels back to a nest that was not a good nest at all.

My children were 6, 11, and 13. A bird made a nest of mud on the tiny ledge of our front door. The children discovered her beautiful little eggs, to their great delight. Every day, they rushed to check the eggs. I prayed these little birds would survive, and I believed they might. I smiled and reminded my own not to touch the nest or the eggs. [Read more…]

Video Blog: Pray Scared

Being scared is not on my top 10 list of fun things to do.

Actually, I don’t think it makes the top 1000.

But encountering fearful situations are part of our existence and how we handle them can say a lot about our relationship with God. Plus, it is a great opportunity to grow closer to Him in Christ.

Which is what today’s video blog is all about… Having the courage to pray scared.

Hidden Ah-Ha’s: Don’t be afraid… Just Trust

I saw a quote recently (I think it was on Pinterest) that said, “Cookies with raisins in them are the reason I have trust issues.”

I laughed. Because it’s true. There’s been times where I was overjoyed to chomp down on a warm, soft chocolate chip cookie only to have my heart shatter in a million tiny pieces when I realized that those dark brown spots were not in fact bits of heaven in milk chocolate form, but rather dried fruit.

And I am only being SLIGHTLY mellow dramatic here.

But honestly, I have trust issues that go deeper than the age-old chocolate chip vs. raisin debacle. [Read more…]
