Embrace the Suck (Repost)

Hi friends… For the next few weeks, Wednesdays will be dedicated to re-sharing some of my favorite posts. I am so blessed to be working on some “big rocks” and pretty awesome God-sized dreams, but I need time to make that happen. So after much prayer, here we are. I pray you enjoy these words… And thanks for extending me Christ-like grace. Oh. And everything is still business as usual for our Thursday #EverydayJesus link-up, so don’t miss it!

Sometimes, life sucks.

Yeah, I said it. And yeah, I said it on a Jesus-loving Christian blog.

But its the truth. Sometimes life sucks.

We live in a world of pain. Of hurt. Of disease. Of evil. Of hard circumstances. Of moments where we wonder how the heck we are supposed to continue to function.

“Sucky” things in life range from the seemingly small and trivial (I lost my stupid wallet– again!) to the painfully large and unexplainable (Acts of terrorism. War. Violence. Etc.)

So yeah, it’s the truth. Sometimes life really just kinda sucks. [Read more…]

Baby Steps

For my entire adult life, I have always heard parents talking about the “big” firsts  in their child’s life: First tooth, first solid food, first vacation…

And yep, you guessed it– first steps.

I never really knew what a big deal those first steps were until we had a daughter of our own.  [Read more…]

Building a Christ-Like Marriage: A Heart of Sacrifice

I used to be quite the Bible scoffer.

Yes, you read that right. Bible scoffer. Not Bible beater or Bible reader– Bible Scoffer.

When I first started legitimately walking with Christ as an adult, I can remember ever-so-vividly scoffing, yes, audibly– out loud with a deep raspy throat sound– about any verses that dealt with husband-wife submission and sacrifice.  I can go to the bookshelf right now and show you the exact page where I wrote in my journal 1 Peter 3:1 about “wives, submit to your husband.” It was day two of Brandon and I doing bible study together in our relationship. My words were full of ME, not him. [Read more…]

Sometimes in life, we find ourselves tied up in mess.

Perhaps it’s a big mess.

And when we end up in aforementioned life mess, rarely is it “on purpose.”

Actually it reminds me of one of my favorite childhood responses when questioned about why I ate dog food/made my sister stick her tongue to a frozen iron pole/blended up a spatula in a batch of zucchini brownies… [Read more…]

It is only three tiny letters. One syllable. But it has changed my life over and over and over again.

Y-E-S. That short little word, “yes.” Seems pretty insignificant. But my yesterday, today and tomorrow are all changed because of it.

One of my little yet significant yes’s happened when I was twelve-years-old, attending Vacation Bible School in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. One minute I was in the pews singing little kid songs about deep, wide love and the next thing I knew, I was at the front of the church with tears streaming down my face.

That is the day I said yes to Jesus. [Read more…]

21 Truths: God is Peaceful

My heart starts to pound. I can feel my blood pressure rising. If you listen really close, I am relatively certain that you can hear the gears whirring at a very high pace within my brain.

Yep, I am getting all wound up about something– again. Just another day in the life of this girl who is constantly seeking His everyday peace.

Le sigh.

Peace is abundantly available in this world, especially from God, but shockingly elusive.

At least for Type A personalities like myself. [Read more…]

21 Truths: God is All-Knowing

The words tumble out of my mouth so fast there is no hope for me to stuff them back in…

“WHAT, in heaven’s name, do you think you are doing?!?!”

It happens all the time. I question those around me when I don’t agree with their choices or decisions.

It is isn’t a matter of needing information– it is a combination of frustration, pride, confusion and a little bit of shock.  [Read more…]

21 Truths: God is Good

Parenting a tiny human is a learning process.

Our daughter is just over a year old now, and while we understand the general logistics about how to keep her alive (eat food, change diapers, don’t chew on electrical cords, etc) it seems like everyday there are new discoveries and questions that we must answer about our parenting “tactics.”

Like how to teach her table manners. (Eventually.) Or how to keep her from exploring her new chompers by taking a chunk out of my arm. And even the little things about how we speak to her and vocabulary that we use.

There are a few things that I want my daughter to hear as she grows and a lot of principles that we hope to raise her around.

One of my big ones that has been on my heart lately is the use of the word “bad.” [Read more…]

Every now and then, I ask my Beloved Husband for input on bloggy topics for this website.

As I was praying through this “21 Truths About God” series for the days leading up to Easter, I wanted his perspective. So I plopped down on the couch, notebook in hand, and challenged Brandon to help me come up with this Godly traits or “truths.”

We started shooting them back and forth. Some came pretty quickly, like loving and faithful. Brandon said “Infallible,” and I responded with “Yeah! That’s a good one!”

I wrote it down. But a few moments later we both paused, looked at each other and said, “Wait a second… What exactly does infallible mean?”  [Read more…]

Flair for Flexibility (Army Wife Network)

I am a planner.

Few things get me more excited than having a game plan for the day, complete with a “To Do.”  (Confession: If I accomplish something NOT on my “to do” list, I have been known to write it down then immediately mark it off. I know. I’m kind of a nerd. I’m ok with it.)

I love knowing what’s going on, who’s doing what and how we are going to get there.

Which was a great attitude to have… until I married my Beloved Soldier.

Within 14 seconds of being married, I determined that to thrive in this army wife life, we have to adopt a flair for being flexible.
