I have never liked scary movies. Ever.
Maybe you are a theatrical thrill seeker and nothing makes you happier than a racing pulse as you watch a movie from your couch.
You can go ahead and invite me over to your house for a movie night, but just know that I will be in the kitchen raiding your fridge and eating all the popcorn reading a book.
I guess I just don’t understand the excitement of scary movies. Because their level of realism is about zero. “Oh hey, let me walk into this dark house by myself. Pay no attention to the crescendo of intense music in the background. And is that a trail of blood on the ground? I think I will follow it. Only good things can come from this, right?” [Read more…]

There is a nest outside my window as I touch the stacks of books I’m preparing for bible study. It seems like a good nest. In His Word, I hold hope in my hands, and my heart travels back to a nest that was not a good nest at all.
My children were 6, 11, and 13. A bird made a nest of mud on the tiny ledge of our front door. The children discovered her beautiful little eggs, to their great delight. Every day, they rushed to check the eggs. I prayed these little birds would survive, and I believed they might. I smiled and reminded my own not to touch the nest or the eggs. [Read more…]

Do you ever wish we could just hit a reset button and start over?
I do.
Earlier this week, I was having one of “those mornings.”
I thought it was just me… perhaps I was just in a mood. Or better yet, my favorite excuse: hormones.
That morning, I was easily rattled. Tiny Human woke up at 5:14am. The 12-lb dog found the gate left open by my Beloved hubs and sprinted across the neighborhood, howling like a high-pitched coon dog. He quickly returned when he heard the tone in my voice (and the fact that my quest to never-ever cuss was temporarily abandoned. Don’t worry. It was only one word. I repented.)
Then Tiny Human was squeaking for breakfast and I tripped over the dog as I scramble to appease her. I was flustered, already sweating and begging God for a reset button.

I am so blessed to be working on some “big rocks” and pretty awesome God-sized dreams, but I need time to make that happen. So after much prayer, here we are. We are all fighting a battle. Some of us more than one. As an army wife (specifically: Infantryman’s wife), and a mama, AND a minister, it sometimes seems like the battles are never-ending. I battle with maintaining patience, changing schedules, miscommunication, all while attempting to continually support my Beloved Husband in his quest to defend this mighty country against all enemies, foreign and domestic, keep my daughter from licking an electrical outlet and still do Jesus-y things for God. It’s a lot sometimes. But whether you are an army spouse, doctor’s spouse, farmer’s spouse or any son or daughter of Christ, we are all fighting the same spiritual Enemy. [Read more…]

After a weekend of relaxation fun (or, if you are like me and a few other folks I know, a weekend filled with catching up on your to do list outside of the working world,) the alarm sounds at whatever-o’clock in the morning.

I took a boxing class my senior year of college (my 5th year at KSU.) It wasn’t because I aspired to be in the ring, listening to the announcer’s echo of my mad skills as I faced my opponent. Nor did I plan to learn how to properly punch people who annoyed me.
