Why I Gave Up (Lent Results)

Well friends, here we are.

Another spring, looking back a week ago at Easter. That precious, Holy Day that God saved the world.

But guess what? He keeps on saving us. Even today. Two thousand years later. One way He does this, in addition to the never-expiring offer for salvation through Jesus, is through growing us in our day-to-day lives.

And how fitting? “Grow” is my One Word for 2014.  [Read more…]

21 Truths: God Is Sovereign

I must admit that sometimes I don’t have all the answers.

Google is one of my best friends when it comes to the mundane questions that I have: Can you eat sour cream past its expiration date? How can I keep moss from growing in my yard? What are the symptoms of a mold allergy?

Although Google is a mighty powerful tool, it doesn’t have all the answers either.

Especially when it comes to the hard stuff.

Like the questions I am asked as a minister. [Read more…]

21 Truths: God is Trustworthy

Would you say that you are a trusting person?

For me, my answer would probably lean towards yes. Sure, there are a few folks out there that make me raise an eyebrow as to whether or not I can legitimately trust them, but for the most part I try to give people the benefit of the doubt.

However, there was a point in my life that trusting other people was an issue. Specifically on almost every leadership retreat I ever attended, especially if a ropes course was involved. [Read more…]

21 Truths: God is Good

Parenting a tiny human is a learning process.

Our daughter is just over a year old now, and while we understand the general logistics about how to keep her alive (eat food, change diapers, don’t chew on electrical cords, etc) it seems like everyday there are new discoveries and questions that we must answer about our parenting “tactics.”

Like how to teach her table manners. (Eventually.) Or how to keep her from exploring her new chompers by taking a chunk out of my arm. And even the little things about how we speak to her and vocabulary that we use.

There are a few things that I want my daughter to hear as she grows and a lot of principles that we hope to raise her around.

One of my big ones that has been on my heart lately is the use of the word “bad.” [Read more…]

Confession: It is so easy for me to rejoice and see Jesus in my everyday when things are going great. When life is hunky-dory. When it is smooth sailing.

But when those waters of life get a little bit rough? Yikes. I feel a bit like Peter, sinking below the water’s surface.

Why? Because I took my eyes off Christ.

You may be up against a big challenge. That just means you need to get ready. You're about to see a promise come to pass

What Marriage Is Not

I recently heard a commercial on our local Christian radio station that got me pretty fired up.

It was the founder of E-Harmony, the online matchmaking website. Now, I have nothing against online dating and whatnot– God can use a variety of avenues to bring a man and woman together in marriage. But during the commercial, this dude said something that made me sigh, raise my eyebrows and get a little twitchy.

To paraphrase his statement, he said something along the lines that “the decision of who you marry will have the biggest impact on how happy you will be in life.”

Um, I don’t agree.  [Read more…]

On a scale of one to ten, how thankful are you? (Ten being “I thank God multiple times a day for EVERYTHING” and one being “thankful-schmankful.”)

If I am being perfectly honest with myself, I would have to say I am well above a one but still have some work to do to get to a ten. Really, if we are still on this earth, then we won’t ever reach a ten because there is always something to be thanking God for.

Even the hard stuff.  [Read more…]

Appreciate the Mountaintop

Sometimes I really take God for granted. Perhaps you do to.

Just think about how many times we nearly forget about God when things are going great then fall to our knees when our world comes crashing down.

If we aren’t grounded in faith all the time then those hard moments can turn into griping and grumbling sessions instead of petitions for help. I think there is a delicate yet very attainable balance we can reach with just a small shift of our perspective. [Read more…]

Fruit of the Spirit in Parenting

Fact: Parenting is HARD.

Not all days, but a lot of the days (or at least part of most days) is a challenge like I have never experienced before. For all you parents out there, I imagine you are probably nodding your head and whispering under your breath “Amen, girl.”  For those of you who aren’t parents, don’t check out. Because God can use ALL of our situations and seasons to develop fruit within us.

By fruit, I don’t mean apples, bananas or grapes. This is Spiritual fruit– even sweeter, albeit much harder to grow. [Read more…]
