The Best Boss

These three little piggies were “take-home” souvenirs from my first-ever job. Fact #1: Pigs are rarely a profitable undertaking. Fact #2: This is probably the second most unattractive picture ever taken of me. High school was precious.

I jumped head first into the “working world” the summer after turned 16 as a sophomore in High School.

My first ever “real” job was working on a several-thousand head farrow to wean/breeding and gestation swine operation in Minnesota.

It was a trip. (Literally.)

Since that point, I have held several jobs. Some were seasonal, some part-time and some big-kid-post-college-graduation full-time jobs.

With each of those jobs, I had a boss.

Looking back, I would have to say I have had some pretty great supervisors. Folks like Todd, Brenda, Cindy, and Sharon.

But I have also has some not-so-awesome bosses… Who, because I am a Christian and love Jesus, shall remain nameless. (You are welcome, un-named leaders in my life.)  [Read more…]

Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey

Do you remember that movie from the 1993 called “Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey?” You know, the one with the two dogs (Shadow and Chance) and the cat (Sassy.)

Oh. You don’t? Well, google it. I will wait.

Got it? Ok. Well, it was one of my favorite movies back in the day– we owned it on VHS, and if we still had a VHS player, I would probably still watch it on occasion. That movie included my favorite things: Disney, animals and adventure.

No Bull Rule

Sometimes profound revelations come from the most unexpected places.

Like over a plate of lasagna, caprese and chocolate avocado mousse. (Not mixed together of course.)

Christ in a Cow Pasture

Bless the Lord, O my soul! My Dad came to Christ yesterday… In the middle of a cow pasture!

As I write this, I am still in awe of how the Holy Spirit works… He really does show up anywhere, anytime, even in the cab of a work truck in the middle of a cow pasture in southeast Kansas. Ever since I completed an evangelism class for my masters program, I have had a new outlook about sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I realized it was something that I could do—and that I didn’t have to do much, other than have the courage to bring up the subject and allow the Holy Spirit to move. [Read more…]

Home Sweet Home

The highway stretched out before me… I look to my left, and there is a pasture full of cows with their new fall calves. On my right, a paddock with a few head of horses lounging in the Kansas mid-morning sun. I crack my car window just a smidge. I take a deep breath as the air rushes in, tousling my hair. I turn to my faithful baby dog traveling companion in the passenger seat, smile and say “Justus… we are almost HOME!” [Read more…]

Prayers: Atchison & Agriculture

Today’s post isn’t funny or witty. It isn’t meant to be convicting or profound. It’s simply a request for prayers.

On Saturday night at about 7:00pm a grain elevator in Atchison, Kansas exploded. At the time of writing, three people are dead. Three are still missing (presumed dead) and two are hospitalized.

Unforeseen tragedies happen every day throughout our cities, nation and world. So why is this one so different for me? [Read more…]

Being unique is awesome.

You might have already picked up on the fact that I personally am a little, um, “different” than most. Ok, maybe even weird. Perhaps odd is a good word? How about eclectic? I don’t know a whole lot of small-town southeast Kansas girls who graduated with an animal science degree that now work at a church only after becoming a certified auctioneer and graduating citizen’s police academy just because. No Devil’s Food Allowed

So here’s the thing with eating, feasting and cooking. You have to have ingredients. How do we get ingredients? Agriculture. Now, I am not going to get all wound up talking about ag, because many of you know I could go off on a tangent and write a blog that is term paper length on that topic. But in order to feed ourselves and others, we have to first GROW the ingredients.

Just like growing crops or basic household herbs, it all starts with a seed. When it comes to planting things in our brains, we can either plant something that is going to help us feast with God or eventually produce Devil’s food (and sadly not the cake.) “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8) [Read more…]
