Embrace the Suck (Repost)

Hi friends… For the next few weeks, Wednesdays will be dedicated to re-sharing some of my favorite posts. I am so blessed to be working on some “big rocks” and pretty awesome God-sized dreams, but I need time to make that happen. So after much prayer, here we are. I pray you enjoy these words… And thanks for extending me Christ-like grace. Oh. And everything is still business as usual for our Thursday #EverydayJesus link-up, so don’t miss it!

Sometimes, life sucks.

Yeah, I said it. And yeah, I said it on a Jesus-loving Christian blog.

But its the truth. Sometimes life sucks.

We live in a world of pain. Of hurt. Of disease. Of evil. Of hard circumstances. Of moments where we wonder how the heck we are supposed to continue to function.

“Sucky” things in life range from the seemingly small and trivial (I lost my stupid wallet– again!) to the painfully large and unexplainable (Acts of terrorism. War. Violence. Etc.)

So yeah, it’s the truth. Sometimes life really just kinda sucks. [Read more…]

Strength Training with Christ

Strength Training with Christ

I have been on a journey to “get fit” for about seven years.

It started in college with a challenge from my Animal Science Anatomy and Physiology professor. He said that if we would take initiative to go to the rec center and meet with a trainer for a fitness/nutrition evaluation then write a paper on it, we would get a few points of extra credit.

Who knew that the one of the most rewarding, challenging, painful and sweaty experiences of my life would be motivated through academics? [Read more…]

A Walk Through the Parables

When I was growing up, I loved stories with a moral.

I remember story time at the library was always the highlight of my week. My sister and I would listen to records (yes, real records) on the record player downstairs while Mom worked or sowed. Nearly all of the stories we hear whether read to us at the library or in over that record player in the Northwest Kansas basement were packed with adventure– and a great moral of how to live (or not to live) life.

Now as an adult, I still love a good story with a solid take-home truth.

Which allows me the opportunity to introduce a new series, “A Walk through the Parables.”

A Long-Awaited Vacation

I have been blogging nearly three years.

In those three years, I have only taken more than a day off or so at a time twice: Once when I got crazy sick with pneumonia when I was preggo then last year for a few days when we were moving 4000 miles across the country with a tiny dog and brand-new-baby human.

It’s been an intense yet blessed three years.

So I am finally taking a vacation. For the next two weeks, I shall be hanging out with Jesus (and family) to recharge my brain, heart and typing fingers. [Read more…]

I have learned that when God speaks, I better listen.

This year he spoke to me and I perked up… Then quickly deflated at what I thought He said.

“Um, hey there God… Can you repeat that? I think we have a bad connection because I just thought I heard you tell me to become a runner… And something about running a half-marathon? Come again, please.” [Read more…]

Enjoy the Ride

The sun was bearing down on our necks. I tried to smoothly fan my armpits to make sure sweat didn’t show. I peered around the dude wearing a Hawaiian-flowered shirt in front of me, who was eating a corndog and funnel cake at the same time.

Was this line EVER going to move? HURRY. UP.

Those were the days of theme park rides. I have to say that I have (sadly) grown out of that thrill, but for a teenager, “riding rides” was as good as it got. (Sidenote: unless you have a super strong stomach, don’t eat a corn dog and funnel cake right before you get on a ride that is name something along the lines of “Roller Coaster of Doom…” you will most likely embarrass yourself and gross out everyone around you. Just sayin.) [Read more…]

Video Blog: God’s Perspective

Today’s Take-Home Message:

Sometimes we are too close to see things clearly.

Sounds a bit counterintuitive, but it is so true. Check out today’s video blog for a little somethin’ somethin’ on how to step back and see life through God’s perspective.  [Read more…]

Building a Christ-Like Marriage: Have Fun!

I used to be quite the fun-lover.

Please notice the operative phrase there: “Used to be.”

Growing up, I was also ready for an adventure, be it catching frogs in the pond or swimming in the stock tank. In college, I was usually the first one loaded in the car when somebody said “road trip” and thoroughly enjoyed spontaneous escapades of fun.

Even when Barn and I were dating and first married, fun was easy to come by.

And then… Life happened. [Read more…]

God’s Signature (#EverydayJesus Link Up)

Signature

When I got married, I realized there was a lot of adjusting to be done.

I had to adjust to sharing the bed. I had to adjust to cooking for what seemed like an army. I had to adjust to ridiculously mind-numbing television programs.

But even more than that… I had to adjust to my new last name.

For the first several months, it took a lot of concentration to make sure I signed with my new name instead of my maiden name.

Let’s just say I used a lot of white out for a while. [Read more…]

We are all fighting a battle. Some of us more than one. As an army wife (specifically: Infantryman’s wife), and a mama, AND a minister,  it sometimes seems like the battles are never-ending. I battle with maintaining patience, changing schedules, miscommunication, all while attempting to continually support my Beloved Husband in his quest to defend this mighty country against all enemies, foreign and domestic, keep my daughter from licking an electrical outlet and still do Jesus-y things for God. It’s a lot sometimes. But whether you are an army spouse, doctor’s spouse, farmer’s spouse or any son or daughter of Christ,  we are all fighting the same spiritual Enemy. [Read more…]
