Different, Important & Useful #WilcoWednesday

Welcome to Wilco Wednesday! If you are a new around these parts, “Wilco” is Army-speak for “Will Comply.” Think of it as saying “Roger, God. Got it. Will do.”  So that is what Wednesday here at 7 Days Time is all about– exploring his decrees and seeking guidance for what complying with Him looks like in everyday life. The best part? He loves us for who we are, not what we do.  Remember: He doesn’t want perfection, just obedience. Share. Enjoy. Interact. And let’s respond to God’s call with  a hearty “Wilco, Lord!” Welcome my friend Tara as she makes her writing debut! (Be sure to give her some love and leave a comment below.)

Go down to the end of our street then take a left. Take the third right and keep going until you reach Linden.

I made this 1.12 mile walk every Wednesday night and Sunday morning starting when I was 10-years-old.  That 30 minute walk was the difference between my parents and I…  and it was the glue that held my faith together.

What made me want to go to church so bad I would take myself? That’s easy. Her name was Evelyn and she once lived across the street from my childhood home. [Read more…]

My Joy Thermometer

Nearly three years ago, when my tiny human was born and subsequently made me into a Mama, I doubted my abilities in all things child-rearing.

How will I know what she needs? When does she need to eat again? How much tummy time is enough? Can you have too much tummy time? And the biggest one…

How will I know when she is sick!?!?

I had always admired moms who could take one look at a tiny to medium sized-human, raise their eyebrows, place their palm on the little human’s head and say, “Yep. Got a fever.”

I tried to adopt that same suave, confident attitude of fever diagnosis growing up, practicing on myself when I was under the weather and even other people (especially my little brother who is 12 years younger than me.)

But it was always fruitless. I couldn’t tell the difference between a normal-temped kid versus one that was two degrees this side of the sun.

The only fever I knew about was the one that needed more cowbell. #SNLreference [Read more…]

Julie Ann Knight was a sweet-natured, compassionate young woman with a solid sense of humor and an unsophisticated understanding of God. Although her understanding of her Heavenly Father was simple, it was pure and innocent and she loved Him very much.

Julie Ann Knight was my mother. And she was beautiful. She had a heart of gold and she laughed so much it was contagious.  She didn’t have a great childhood, being raised mostly by a single mother who worked long days to make ends meet. While her mother loved her deeply, she wasn’t one for emotional moments or affection unless there was a reason, which was how she was raised. (Call it generational, if you will.) But Julie, she was as affectionate as a puppy. She longed for people to love her and like her. I tend to take after her in this regard.

Julie was easily liked, and she found out later in life that would get her into trouble. My mother found herself pregnant in the summer of 1982 and quickly made the assumption she wasn’t ready to be a mother or able to provide for a baby. Julie, pressured by her internal struggle and people in her life, came to the conclusion to have an abortion. [Read more…]

11 Ways that Being an Army Wife is Like Running a Marathon

Life is funny.

Why? Because just a few short years ago, I had two “nevers” that I (naively) thought were non-negotiable.

  1. I will NEVER love/marry/follow a man.
  2. I will NEVER run a marathon.

You can probably already see where this post is going.

Obviously, I have done both. [Read more…]

Life is Beautiful (Review & Giveaway!)

I’ve been a book worm for as long as I can remember.

Growing up, I would always prefer to be tucked away in a corner reading, learning or studying instead of playing outside (or, as my parents often “urged” us to do the farming chores.)

I think I even loved reading more than TV watching.

Which stands true even today, decades later.

So when someone contacts me to say, “Hey, can we send you a copy of a book to read and review?” I can hardly resist.

But honestly, that’s a dangerous practice. Because what I am I going to do if the book is terrible?!? (I still get a free book out of the deal so…)

However, in my nearly five years of online ministry, a “terrible book” coming my way has yet to happen. Every single book I have read, reviewed and share has encouraged my heart or edified me in some way.

And today’s book Life is Beautiful is no exception. [Read more…]

“We’re moving WHERE??” The words stumbled out of my mouth before I could stop them, almost immediately followed by the tears I was fighting with everything in me to hold back.

My husband had walked in the door and in the time it would have taken him to say, “Hi Baby, I’m home,” and tell me about his day, he announced that he had received orders to PCS. For those who aren’t part of the military community, PCS stands for Permanent Change of Station. In other words: *home* is no longer *here* and we’d better start packing.

I’d known it was coming. We’d been at his current duty station for over 4 years, and it was definitely time. Truth be told, it wasn’t the moving that bothered me. It was where. We had been told so many possibilities in the months leading up to this moment, all of which I had thoroughly researched and mentally prepared for, but then, in true Army fashion, he came home with the news that we were going somewhere completely unforeseen. Honestly,  I was a little shell-shocked. I had done plenty of planning for all the known possibilities. I wasn’t prepared for the unexpected. [Read more…]

The Christian Paradox

I really enjoy using semi-random words to describe semi-normal things.

“How was your day?” Just ducky.

“How was supper?” Legit.

“How was your weekend?” Fantastical! (Which is a real word, BTW.)

But sometimes, fancy words get the best of me.

So in order to win this wordy battle, I want to use them more. Work them down, learn them into submission. [Read more…]

We have been here at Joint Base Lewis McChord for almost 2 months now. And we still don’t have our household goods.

I know our situation is not necessarily unique among Army families, but it is new to me. The temptation to whine and complain is quite strong and there are moments when I give in to that temptation. However, there are also shining moments of lessons learned, encouragement, and humility. [Read more…]
