When the Going Gets Tough: Part 2 (Link-up & Giveaway)

You might recall that last month, we kicked off a mini-series about what to do when the going gets tough as a milspouse.

We had such a good time with it, that I didn’t want to stop there. So today, I will be sharing another one of my personal “coping” tips when things are harder than normal for our military spouse lives. And of course, we will also take another look at some great ideas shared by our AWN fans!

So here is my monthly tip on how I deal with life when the going gets tough… I get busy– “Sharpening my saw.”

No, friends, I don’t get all lumberjack and start building a cabin. But I do take leadership guru Stephen Covey’s advice and take a time-out to sharpen my saw.

Here’s the premise: Two woodsmen are out in the woods, you know, doing woodsmen stuff. (I assume this means chopping down things.) Both are under a deadline to meet a quota. One of them stops periodically to check his blade and take a few precious moments to sharpen it. The other one keeps sawing away, as his blade gets duller and duller. Who do you think is going to be more successful (and less exhausted!) at the end of the day. Yep, the one who stopped occasionally to sharpen the saw.

I do the same thing as a military spouse. My motivated to-do-achiever-self-instinct is to keep frantically pushing forward until I feel like the wheels are about to fall off. But I have learned that the smart thing is to take a break every now and then… Do something that fills my souls and recharges my heart.

It could be huge and profound like taking a couple days away by myself. But that only *maybe* happens annually– if I am lucky. I CAN do something ever couple days or so to sharpen my saw: Read a book for fun, drink a hot tea and watch a show on Netflix post-bedtime, Zentangle,  close my computer and take a couple of hours to window shop downtown, get a “fancy” yet simple lunch and dine by myself, grab a quick coffee with a friend or even drink a Coke Zero in the parking lot of Wal-Mart while scrolling Facebook for 15 precious minutes.

But don’t just take my word for it. See what other suggestions our AWN follows had to say about…

I don’t know about you, but this is super motivating (and a great reminder for me too!) What do YOU do when the going gets tough?  Jump in and leave a comment below. (And don’t forget to this month’s giveaway!)

Until next time… Keep calm and soldier on, my friends.

Proud to be a soldier for Christ,

you humbled my adversaries before me.” ~Psalm 18:39

A Special Thank You & A Veteran’s Funeral (Army Wife Network)

I’ve been blogging for Army Wife Network for over three years now. And if you have been around these parts for any length of time, you have likely heard about my theory as a military spouse to live out the “No-Plan-Plan.

For the most part, the No-Plan-Plan pertains to the everyday milspouse stuff– the PCSs, TDYs, deployments, when hubby is coming home (ish,) what day he has off (ish), where/when we will be going next (ish)… Well, you get the point.

But sometimes, the No-Plan-Plan happens in big ways when we least expect it. As normal people. (My husband calls that “life.”) [Read more…]

Whole30: Accountability & (Staying) Motivated

Ok, my friends. Just a few short days until my Whole60 (which likely will turn into Whole90… Or maybe Whole120-eeeek!) is about to begin.

And man, am I excited.

It feels like New Year’s Eve. You know the feeling– when things feel fresh, new, we have all the motivation in the world to do all the things.

The kicker is, much like New Years Resolutions, it is sometimes a lot of work to keep that enthusiasm and motivation going. Especially with something that requires the planning, energy and forethought as Whole30. (Want to know more about this Whole30 thing? Check out the Low-down here. Or tips for planning. Oh, and don’t miss Part 1 and Part 2 of What to expect.)

So today, I am sharing a few tips on how to find accountability in this process and stay motivated.  [Read more…]

Whole30: What to Expect (Part 1)

One of the biggest challenges of starting something new, be it making a new friend, traveling to a new location or participating in a new sport, is the fear or anxiety associated with not knowing what to expect. (That, or with the latter example, the fear of objects flying at my face. I once split my lip open while playing ping-pong, but that’s a story for another day. #NeverSaidIWasGraceful)

So today, as I approach my start date of a new round of Whole60 (and for the first time have legit invited others to join me via Facebook group) I want to share a few points of “What to Expect” should you decide to join me on this journey.

(BTW: If you are just joining us, be sure to get the Whole30 Low-Down and Prep Tips.) [Read more…]

Whole30: Prep & Getting Started

Easter is done, my Peeps. (Pun intended.) My new tiny human is 2 months old. So now my brain is (excitedly) shifting to getting in the swing of things with healthy eating choices, which for me, means doing a fresh round of Whole30 starting May 1st. (Actually, it will be a Whole60– at least. If you need to catch up on what it is, check out this post.)

In July of 2015, I did a Whole30. In 2016, I did Whole120 from January 1st to May 1st. And it revolutionized my life. Freed me from emotional eating. I had literally never felt physically/emotionally better in my entire life.  [Read more…]

The Rolling Stones

I was compelled to re-share an previously published post I about Easter… all about Rock’N’Roll. Especially that ONE rock that rolled to set us free…

****

Fun Fact: The Rolling Stones recorded 437 songs.

That is a lot of blues-ish rock and roll music minutes.

Pretty cool, huh? Now you have something interesting to share tonight at the supper table. [Read more…]

The Whole30 Low-Down

It’s no secret that one of my favorite “hobbies” is eating.

Maybe it’s yours too.

Unfortunately, for the first two-thirds of my life, food was pretty close to my god. I was an emotional eater and used food as a “false boundary” when it came to emotions, self-esteem, the whole shebang.

But this coming fall will mark ten years (yes, TEN!) since I began this journey of fitness. I’ve lived in more states than I can currently remember, gotten married to my soldier,  and been through three pregnancies, two of which resulted in our sweet children… And a lot of weight gain (no matter how hard I tried to keep it under control. #GeneticsCanBeAnnoying) [Read more…]

Oh “BOY”~ What a Birth Story!!

Hello, dear readers! Good news… I’m still kicking.

If you aren’t on Facebook, you were probably curious as to where I’ve been the past few weeks. Well, as you can imagine, that baby I was blogging about FINALLY came out.

And BOY oh BOY! What a birth story it was!!! We are deviating a bit from our normal “faith” focused content today because I want to capture the details of how this new Tiny Human decided to make his appearance into the world before all the details ride off into the sunset of my sleep deprived mind. (And yes… It was a BOY!!! EEEE!!! But more on that momentarily.) [Read more…]

Reasons for Milspouse Pride (Part 3: Link-up & Giveaway)

In the words of the late Paul Harvey, today it is time for “The Rest of the Story.”

The last couple of months, we have been talking about Reasons for Milspouse pride. (Need to catch up? Check out Part 1 and Part 2.)

So now, we present our final chapter of:

I am a proud military spouse when…
