No Bull Rule

Sometimes profound revelations come from the most unexpected places.

Like over a plate of lasagna, caprese and chocolate avocado mousse. (Not mixed together of course.)

Last week, I was having supper with my friend Kim. For those of you who have met Kim, you know she is 1) Hilarious 2) Nearly as loud and excitable as me <which is a feat in itself> and 3) Sings like Martina McBride. For those of you who don’t know her… now you do. Ish. [Read more…]

Playground Guardian

We waited for this precious experience every single day.

Small children snarfing down their lunch, tater tots flying, ketchup splattering, milk dribbling. We were racing against the clock.  We had to get to recess.

Sure, recess came three times a day throughout my years of very early youth. But the length after-lunch recess was solely dependent on our ability to inhale our food and power walk from the cafeteria to the outside door. (Note: Sometimes a second grader’s definition of “not running” is different than the principal’s definition. And you had to walk that line carefully, or the five minutes you spent in the office during recess for “running” would nearly break your heart. Not that I would know.) [Read more…]

Fresh Cut of Joy

Annnddd… It’s Monday.

Before you pull a Garfield the Cat move by grabbing a big pan of lasagna, pulling the covers back over your head and muttering “I hate Mondays!” hang with me for just a second.

I’m not a big fan of Mondays either. I have grown to tolerate them, but honestly, what choice did I have? (Turns out employers are not super big supporters of employees who desire to boycott Mondays on a weekly basis. Just kidding.) I have learned to embrace Mondays (and every other day for that matter) because I seek to find new, fresh little cuts of joy in everything around me. [Read more…]

Hurt So Good (Five Minute Friday)

Today, I am linking up with The Gypsy Mama and hopping aboard the “Five Minute Friday” experience. She gives us a prompt. Then we write, fingers flowing, purely for the joy of writing. For five minutes. And five minutes only. No editing. No profound outlines and thought development.

Just write. So today, join me on my first Five Minute Friday… Todays prompt: ACHE.

GO.  [Read more…]

In the Bottom of Your Sink

Who would you say that your everyday hero is?

Perhaps it is your spouse? A parent? A child? A mentor? Maybe it’s the law enforcement officers or firefighters or soldiers (or maybe if you are lucky like me, it is your soldier spouse…)

In addition to those awesome hero’s listed above, my hero is any person who had the courage to clean out the drain in the bottom of the kitchen sink. [Read more…]

Removal of the Worrywart

I’ve always been something of a worrywart.

Yep, I was that kid in middle and high school that would always bring “extra” books to class “just in case.” I was terrified that my world would crumble to pieces should I forget to bring my ruler to math class.

For most of my life, I have lived in a bubbles of “what ifs.” As I have gotten older and my relationship with Christ has grown so much deeper, those constant worries have diminished. [Read more…]

Do Not Call List

Beep, beep.

“Oh, hang on, just a second, I’ve got another call coming in… It’s a number I don’t recognize, I better take this.”

I am thankful that we live in a era of caller ID. However, it is completely against my army wife heart to ever ignore calls from “unknown numbers” or a random call from someone other than in my phonebook… especially when my beloved and I are separated by duty. I never know what time of day he might call, on what line and what the number looks might look like. [Read more…]

Guest Posting at Living for One

Ladies and Gentlemen… it’s finally happened. Please, give me a moment to prepare.

<Cue: Dimming lights, slow crescendo of music coupled with drum roll…>

I am guest posting for my boss!!

Ok, she really doesn’t like it when I call her “Boss.” (At least that is what she SAYS.) But Kelli Wommack isn’t just my boss. She is my mentor. My personal cheerleader. My coach. And my best Georgia friend.

I think I’m smitten. [Read more…]

Wish Granted

The time has come. Many of you loyal readers out there were wishing for that Jesus Caffeine Prize pack that I was offered last Friday. But alas, we can only have one winner (this time…)

And the Jesus Caffeine winner is…

BRITTANI SHANK!!

Congratulations, Brittani and WISH GRANTED. You are the new owner of a Starbucks gift card, journal and “Guerilla Lovers” book . CONGRATULATIONS once again and thanks from the bottom of my heart to all of you who entered. Seriously. It blew me away!

The amazingness of this ministry thus far coupled with granted wishes (or rather answered prayers) finds me needing to revisit my word  for 2012. [Read more…]

Enjoy the Ride

The sun was bearing down on our necks. I tried to smoothly fan my armpits to make sure sweat didn’t show. I peered around the dude wearing huge flowered shirt in front of me, who was eating a corndog and funnel cake at the same time.

Was this line EVER going to move? HURRY. UP.

Those were the days of theme park rides. I have to say that I have (sadly) grown out of that thrill, but for a teenager, “riding rides” was as good as it got. (Sidenote: unless you have a super strong stomach, don’t eat a corn dog and funnel cake right before you get on a ride that is name something along the lines of “Roller Coaster of Doom…” you will most likely embarrass yourself and gross out everyone around you. Just sayin.) [Read more…]
