My daughter, being the apparent (hereditary) overachiever that she is, hit the Terrible Twos early.

Several months before her second birthday, it was like a switch was flipped and she learned the power of a tantrum.

We went from moderately peaceful breakfasts to complete, total, utter meltdowns because she wanted a different color of cheese. (Like I am supposed to know THAT?)

In all honesty, her tantrums really aren’t terrible… But if you ever stop by during one of these meltdowns, you will probably witness me talking to the ceiling, sighing heavily, rolling my eyes and muttering something like, “Lord in heaven… Are you serious right now?”  [Read more…]

I wouldn’t say that I am an overly needed person.

Yeah, I “need” basic things like food, water, shelter, clothing (because trust me– nobody wants to see otherwise) but for the most part, I am pretty simple.

Although, I have to admit– I need other things in life– not physical needs, but heart needs.

And fortunately, Jesus in my everyday supplies what I need. He delivers– physically, spiritually, emotionally, the whole shebang. [Read more…]

Perfect Timing #EverydayJesus Link-up

I adore moments of perfect timing.

Perhaps it is just my OCD nature. Maybe it is because I just love it when things flow seamlessly.

But really, I think it is because each little moment of “perfect timing” helps me to see Jesus in my everyday.

After all– God IS kind of the big bopper of time-keeping.

One example of “perfect timing” sticks in my brain…

A while back, I was finishing up a tough run. I was at the point of no return with just a few more minutes to go. I had been running hard and (as usual) was battling my brain that kept telling me to slow down to a walk.

As I huffed, puffed, sweated and groaned, I prayed. Please God, send me some encouragement. I want to finish this strong, at my steady pace. Please Lord– just get me there. [Read more…]

If you have been around here for a few moments, you probably already know a few things about me.

I pretend to run. I love chocolate, reading, new journals and inky pens.

And I am a dreamer. Not the kind of dreamer that my husband regularly makes fun of my for like the weird stuff that comes into my head when I am sleeping (“Ok, so there I was with Abe Lincoln, a beaver and a giraffe…”) I mean the kind of dreamer who loves imagining the “What’s Next?” that God has for me.

Every year for as long as I can remember, I have always had new goals/resolutions/etc for the New Year. But 2014 was the first year that I literally mapped out some “God-sized Dreams,” per the inspiration of my URL friend Holley Gerth.  [Read more…]

One Word 2015: Rest #EverydayJesus

This is the fourth consecutive year that God has called me to choose a “One Word” to focus on for 12 whole months.

And while this word totally makes sense for me, this very well could be the most challenging yet.

In 2012, He called me to TRUST.

2013, I needed to STAND.

Last year in 2014, was all about GROW.

And now, a seasonal culmination of all my One Word journey in 2015: REST. [Read more…]

Not-so-newsflash: Satan is a big, dumb jerkface.

It is no secret that the enemy of our soul is not only a jerkface, but is a jerkface that DOES NOT FIGHT FAIR.

How do I know this? Because I have recently lived through round eleventy billion fighting this punk. [Read more…]

In all my years of leadership and all things special events, I have been blessed to hold a variety of roles.

I have been the planner, the coordinator, the decorator (never again,) the recruiter, the cheerleader, the communicator and a variety of other rather abstract fill-in-the-gap jobs.

Probably one of my most awkward and most memorable was the “Dance-Distance Nazi.” (I know that the word “Nazi” is NOT politically correct, but that is what those pesky little teenagers nicknamed me by the night’s end.)

Let me explain. [Read more…]

The Great But Reversal (#EverydayJesus Link-Up)

If you made it past the title of this post, congratulations.

Now, take courage and keep reading.

“The Great But Reversal.” No friends, it isn’t some new snazzy dance move where we back that thang up. Nor is it the next Charlie Brown movie. However, it is a very powerful and influential concept that can change our thinking in a matter of seconds.

Consider how many times we use that sneaky preposition “but” in a single day.

I really should go for a run… but it is cold outside.

I need to go to the grocery store… but this couch is so comfy.

Yeah, yeah, I should apologize… but she started it.

You see what I am getting at? It is a great excuse maker. A lot of power in that little three-letter word. [Read more…]

Long story short:

I hold many different roles in life: wife, mama, minister, friend, aspiring runner, etc.

I am also what many might deem an “overachiever.” (I have talked about why it is ok just to ‘chieve before.)

But you put those roles and my personality together… And it can be a rather dangerous combination.

Not just for our sanity and schedule, but also for my personal relationship with God.

Check out today’s video blog to see how God spoke to me in one of my alleged “failures.” [Read more…]

Practical Peace

I was so excited.

I quietly shut the door to our master bedroom closet, leaving it cracked so I could hear my toddler in the other room. I softly plopped down in our worn old mushroom chair and exhaled deeply. I lit two tiny votive candles on the makeshift altar. The shadows danced around the small iron cross. The only sound was the very distant hum of the fluorescent light above.

At last. Quiet. Peace. Time to relax and meet with Jesus. All. By. Myself.

It was great. For about three minutes.

Then that darling tiny human of ours found my sacred hiding spot. It wasn’t long before I realized my peace was quickly evaporating. She yanked the prayer request sticky notes off the wall. I tried to appease her with a note card and pencil to “color,” but the notecard was soon shredded and the pencil was sketching on the white closet wall. I couldn’t decide if I should press on with my attempt to experience peace or not. Suddenly my decision was confirmed by the smell that wafted filled the close quarters.

Poop.  [Read more…]
