Business or Personal Relationship? #WilcoWednesday

Welcome to Wilco Wednesday! If you are a new around these parts, “Wilco” is Army-speak for “Will Comply.” Think of it as saying “Roger, God. Got it. Will do.”  So that is what Wednesday here at 7 Days Time is all about– exploring his decrees and seeking guidance for what complying with Him looks like in everyday life. The best part? He loves us for who we are, not what we do.  Remember: He doesn’t want perfection, just obedience. Share. Enjoy. Interact. And let’s respond to God’s call with  a hearty “Wilco, Lord!”  Welcome today my wise and loving friend, Katharina as she shares her heart with us.

For the last couple of months, the Lord has been teaching me to sit still at his feet and listen to his voice as he fills my inmost desires.

In the past, my prayers started with: “Lord, what would you like me to DO next? How shall I DO this? Give me strength to DO it. Could you reveal to me your plan for my life? <so I can move forward without you…>

Can you see a pattern?

Yes, those are my so called “To-Do-List” or “Business Prayers.”  After many years of praying this way and having only a “business relationship” with the Lord, God gently brought this subject to my attention.

I am not saying that we should not ask what we should do next in our life. We want to know if we are in God’s will. However, I realized that most of my prayers were “Business prayers” instead of “Relationship Prayers.”  God is not impressed by my to-do lists or how much I accomplish every day. He is more interested in how I AM.

RelationshipHe wants to have a relationship with me. God is very relational, for this reason we are relational as well. We have a relationship with our parents, siblings, extended family, spouse, children, friends, co-workers, even the mail person. God created us in his image (Gen. 1:27). Jesus, never did anything before he prayed and talked to his Father about it (i.e. John 17). God sent the Holy Spirit, to instruct, teach, and counsel us in every aspect of our lives (Psalm 32:8). God wants a relationship with us.

Here are some examples of “Relationship prayers”

“Jesus, how would you like to be with me in this moment?”

 “Jesus, how would like to have fun with me today?”

“Jesus, what do you love most about me?”

“Jesus, what do you enjoy most in our relationship?”

“Jesus, how beautiful am I to you?”

After you pray, wait for his answer. You would be surprised at his answer to you! 🙂

In the end, it is not so much what you do for his kingdom, but your relationship with him. Are you investing in spending one-on-one time with him? Are you listening to his voice and what the Holy Spirit is instructing, teaching, and counseling you? We are quick to want a plan and a direction, but we might not be so quick in investing time to get to know the Lord and His character. If we did, we would be content in any circumstance and situation we are in, because we are with him – together.

As Paul says in Philippians 4:11-13 (NIV):

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength”.
