A Kaleidoscope Perspective (Wives of Faith)

I don’t know what it is about the my current life season, but I feel like it is one big ol’ glob of nostalgia.

Maybe it is the peace of the changing seasons. Or how my toddler grows and changes (and challenges!) me more every day. Or perhaps because I am getting ready to bid my 20’s farewell.

I don’t know what it is, but honestly, I kind of enjoy it.

Any time I have a spare brain moment, God is pulling my mind back to some former seasons of my life. I don’t think of them with loss or regret, but rather recall with fondness.

Just the other day, as I was praying about this post, I remembered one of my favorite childhood pastimes: Peering through the kaleidoscope.

perspectiveIt’s been years since I have spent my time looking through a hollow tube with colorful plastic (or glass if you were a high roller) pieces that with every nudge, twist or turn would make a new image.

The smallest change of perspective could change the entire picture.

And that is a lot like walking with Jesus.

When we are in the midst of our “stuff,” it looks hard. Nearly impossible. Sometimes insurmountable.

But when we get through it, our perspective has usually changed a bit.

This also applies as I do life with others. I see someone else doing something or behaving in a certain way, and sometimes I have to fight that nasty fleshy nature to judge.  I am reminded that I don’t see the situation from their perspective.

Or better yet– through God’s perspective.

What I might look at and see as a blue, jagged flower shape of less-than-ideal parenting might in fact be a circular, yellowish-orange burst of hope as a sister tries to single-parent with a deployed husband. It is all a matter of where I am sitting, the direction I am looking and really, the current condition of my heart.

I know. It sounds complicated. But God simplifies.

Our world is undoubtedly fallen and we are all a broken people. Fortunately, God takes our broken pieces, arranges them in such a way that, when His light shines through, we see a beautiful image that before was impossible to imagine.

I want that. I want God’s perspective. Don’t you?

“Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective.” ~Colossians 3:1b-2 MSG
