When Bumps become Potholes #EverydayJesus

Welcome to another week of our Everyday Jesus link-up. Be sure to link-up below this post, comment on your neighbor’s blog and share with your friends… Because Jesus is everywhere, every day!

It’s been more than two years, and I still don’t love running with a stroller.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am so grateful for the ability to run– or should I say “yog.” (That’s jog with a soft “J.”) But given the choice, I would rather let my daughter go to “school” and play with her friends instead of load her up and push her down the sidewalk.

Although it still isn’t my favorite thing, I am sort of getting used to it. Now I am less shocked about how heavy that stroller with a kid plus our junk and  a tiny dog attached is when trying to push it up the hill with already-jelly legs. And “embracing” that running into the wind just adds a new level of conditioning.

One thing I am still not accustomed to is how a tiny bump in the road or sidewalk can eventually make a big difference.

I have been running on the same 2-mile-out-and-back path for months now. And some of the bumps are growing bigger.

So big that they are nearly potholes for my poor discount jogging stroller.

PotholesIf I don’t pay attention and hit that bad boy wrong, the whole unit bonks around and stuff goes flying– my phone pops out of the cup holder, my kid’s cup flops out the side and even “Quack-Quack” the stuffed duck blanket feels the impact as a back tire squashes it.

The same thing happens in our spiritual lives. We have to keep our eyes peeled for the “bumps” in the road. Because they might just turn into spiritual potholes.

That extra helping of dessert turns into a bigger jean size.

That one click on an inappropriate website finds us wondering what happened to our marriage.

A single cruel word to our child turns into a habit which results in a broken relationship.

One eye roll to our spouse’s sarcastic comment grows into a typical reaction, giving Satan a foothold in our marriage.

A window shopping excursion turns into an over-budgeted extravaganza, finding us in unexpected debt.

One heated comment to a nonbeliever breaks down Christ working in their life, potentially impacting their eternity.

It is all too easy for our “small” little bumps of sin to become potholes.

But we mustn’t despair. For God sees our hearts and desire to please Him. We simply must petition Him to open our eyes and mold our hearts as we submit.

He will fill smooth out our spiritual bumps, redirect our path and even get out the spiritual “asphalt” to patch up any potholes in our lives.

Dear readers: Where in life do you see any spiritual bumps that jolt your spirit? Are you on the path to hitting a pothole? What steps do you need to take to change that? Join in the conversation and leave a comment.

Even if we aren’t sweating and struggling to push a jogging stroller up a hill, avoiding street and sidewalk bumps, we can still invite Jesus into our everyday to help us avoid a crash.

He will patch our potholes– we just need to submit that work order and grab His spiritual shovel.

“So, friends, confirm God’s invitation to you, his choice of you. Don’t put it off; do it now. Do this, and you’ll have your life on a firm footing, the streets paved and the way wide open into the eternal kingdom of our Master and Savior, Jesus Christ.” ~2 Peter 1:10-11 MSG
