I have to be honest… I have always been somewhat of a misfit.
Growing up, I would much rather read inside or go to the library than be frolicking outside in the spring weather.
In high school, I didn’t do ANY sports (unless you count cheerleading for one year.) Our school was teeny-tiny (um, 18 people in our graduating class) so really, anybody who was anybody played sports.
For senior prom, my date and I wore a duct tape outfit.
In college, I didn’t procrastinate– I always did my work ahead of time “just in case.” #nerdalert
My final college spring break wasn’t spent at a tropical beach somewhere… I was in a hotel ballroom at Missouri Auction School becoming a certified auctioneer.
Yep. I have always been kind of a misfit. And that stands true today.
When I answered the call to ministry a few years ago, my misfit status jumped up a notch. I mean, seriously– I had an undergraduate degree in Animal Science for Pete’s sake! Why would I be getting a masters in Christian Leadership to work for Jesus dollars (see also: free) until further notice?
Many of my peers thought I had lost my mind. They were off graduating med or law school, or starting businesses in foreign countries. Several questioned my decision and inferred that I was “wasting my potential.”
But hey. Their opinion doesn’t really matter, does it?
Jesus’ does. And I will be a misfit for Him until I die.
That is why Michelle DeRusha’s new book “Spiritual Misfit: A Memoir of Uneasy Faith” totally rocked my socks.
This book is for anyone who is following God or ever considered it. Michelle’s words document her own journey from growing up in the Catholic church being afraid of death and simply following the rules to get into heaven to her current place of having a living, thriving, growing relationship with Him. (Side note: this is not a Catholic bashing book. Not at all. Michelle simply addresses the difference between rules and relationship- and all the steps in between.)
“Spiritual Misfit” is a candid, heart-transforming book… Because let’s be honest, following Jesus in today’s world is a bit countercultural and sometimes it is almost impossible not to let leetle-teeny seeds of doubt crop up in different seasons of our life.
Michelle walks us through her journey with an open heart– and some sneaky awesome humor that will make you obnoxiously guffaw as you read it in the bathtub. (Or where ever you do most of your reading.) From ginormous Nebraska grasshoppers to creating a #CheezitTsunami in the living room, this incredible book will not only make you grin but it will stir and spur your heart towards Christ.
How much do I love it, you ask? So much that I want to give you a copy. Enter below for our giveaway!
Also, I invite you think about in what ways YOU might consider yourself a spiritual misfit? Do you doubt? How has God proven Himself to you during your journey with Him? Join the conversation and leave a comment below.
Friends, don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to inspire your heart and fuel your faith. Get your hands on this book… And maybe even a box of Cheez-its.
Misfit for Christ,
