Are you patient? I am not.
Although my patience level has drastically improved since walking with Christ, getting married, learning about this army-wife life and becoming a parent, “patient” still wouldn’t make my top 20 most prominent attributes in my personal description.
I am a gal who likes to get things done and get them done now. The sooner the better– then I can move onto something else.
And if it doesn’t happen quick, fast and in a hurry? I might get a little twitchy.
I know. I am working on it.
But just as most of our “truths” we are discovering about God, patience is one thing that He excels at. Because whenever we miss the mark or mess up, He is still there, waiting for us to come back around.
Why? Because of this truth:
God is Patient.
We do not worship a Microwave God. He doesn’t expect us to instantly grasp His concepts or always get it right the first time. And thank goodness- because then we wouldn’t have much hope.
God fully understands that walking in His ways is a lifetime– or even eternal– process. He sees the entire picture. Because He is patient, He doesn’t hold us to the “instant gratification” standards that we often impose on ourselves.
He waits for us. He let’s us get it wrong then holds out while we stumble through on our way to getting it right. He never loses angrily slams the door while waiting for us to figure it out.
God never loses patience with us.
And that truth, my friend, is what keeps me trying… and reaching… and running after Him. Every. Single. Day.
Just think for a moment: what if God had the amount of patience that we possess? We would be in a whole heap of trouble, right? I lose patience waiting in line at the grocery store. Or while driving in traffic. And yes, I get impatient on Sunday mornings waiting for my Beloved to get in the car so we can go to church.
It isn’t the holiest side of me, not gonna lie. But even the most patient person in the world has got nothing on God’s ability to wait for us and extend grace through His patient, forgiving heart.
This gives me immense encouragement. Seriously.
God waited over two decades for me to get my act together and figure out what is REALLY important in this mortal life– HIM. He didn’t just write me off or check out because I was taking my sweet time doing my own thing.
Nope. He waited. And He is still patient with me, like a loving parent who gently coaxes his child to sleep– even when they fight it tooth and nail.
When have you experienced God’s incredible patience in your life? How does this truth encourage you? I would love to hear all about it. Please join the conversation and leave a comment.
It doesn’t matter how long you have left God waiting or how you are challenging His patience– He will always outlast our misdirection and stubbornness. His patience is rooted in a deep, unending love– and He is willing to wait for you.
Take heart and cling to this truth that yes, God is patient.
Thankful for His Patience,
“And the Lord said, “I will wait until you return.” ~Judges 6:18 NIV
