Home is Where Jesus Calls You

You’ve probably heard your share of “homey” quotes…

“Home is where the heart is.” “Home Sweet Home.” “Home is where you hang your hat.” “There’s no place like home” (Wizard of Oz, what, what!)

Ah, home. It conjures up all sorts of apple-pie-wafting, couch-snuggling, T.G.I.F sitcom watching (does anybody else remember the T.G.I.F television programming?) images of joy. [Read more…]

Hidden Ah-Ha’s: No Fear of Bad News

There are few things in this world that make my heart jump into my throat faster than a phone call from my Beloved that starts like this:

“Hey, Sharita. So… I’ve got some news.”

Please excuse me until I stop hyperventilating. (Just kidding.)

But seriously. I can vividly remember early on in our relationship (during a deployment) how those words could bring me to my knees almost immediately. [Read more…]

The Voice that Matters

Voices. They are everywhere.

It’s the voice of your 7-month-old daughter as she practices her consonants saying “Mamamamama” while she clamors for you attention on the kitchen floor during supper preparation.

It’s the voice of your Beloved spouse saying he will/won’t be home tonight and needs you to please do this or that before that point. [Read more…]

Hidden Ah-Ha’s: Stand Firm & Fall to God

I remember singing that old (as in 1993!) country song by Aaron Tippin.

He’d say you’ve got to stand for somethin’ or you’ll fall for anything
You’ve got to be your own man, not a puppet on a string
Never compromise what’s right and uphold your family name
You’ve got to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything

Back when I was a little girl, I didn’t really give much thought to those lyrics. But now, “standing” for “something” has a totally different meaning for me. [Read more…]

The Wheels on the Bus

It’s been years since I’ve ridden on a school bus route for the sole purpose of getting to and from school.

Even now though, I still can’t see one of those big, yellow behemoths without being briefly taken back to my youthful days of riding the bus.

When I was in elementary school, we lived in rural North Central Kansas. North Central as in, seven miles from Nebraska. And rural as in, 90 (yes 90!) miles from the nearest Wal-Mart. So five days a week for year after year, I rode the big yellow school but from our house ten miles to town and back again.

Hidden Ah-Ha’s: We are not Orphans

Growing up on a farm, we “adopted” dozens of orphaned baby animals to raise through the years.

Sometimes it was a family of tiny baby bunnies after a dog got ahold of their mama. Or maybe some kittens who’s mom went MIA. (We always waited for her to come back… but she didn’t.) Perhaps it was the baby calves who were born during a blizzard and took up residence in our bathtub, back porch or garage til they were back on their feet or a new mama could be found for them. Sometimes it was a baby bird who had fallen from the nest. You name it… we probably tried to raise it. [Read more…]

5 Love Languages: Military Edition (Book Review/Guest Blog)

Marriage. It’s one of the most rewarding yet challenging experiences we can be called to in life.  Paul even tells us in 1 Corinthians 7:28 that “…those who marry will face many troubles in life…”

So yeah, marriage isn’t easy. And when you add the military factor to marriage… Things can get sticky in a hurry if you don’t have your feet on a solid foundation.

Which is why we need all the Godly guidance, tools and encouragement we can get.  “The 5 Love Languages: Military Edition” covers all those bases…

Hidden Ah-Ha’s: It’s not a Vocabulary Issue

Welcome to 7 Days Time.

Today, we will be talking about vomit.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! WAIT! Don’t leave. We aren’t talking about THAT kind of well, ya know… (Sheesh, give me some credit, man. Gross.)

I’m talking about WORD vomit. You know, that flow of words that just seems to bubble up out of the depths of your being and spew everywhere before you can say, “I think I’m going to be sick.”

Something that I am (unfortunately) pretty familiar with. SIGH. [Read more…]
