Unplugged

“Beep, beep, beep… We interrupt this program to bring you special weather announcement. The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the following counties…”

I’m from Kansas. And this little message was heard in our household on a pretty regular basis from the months of March to October. It was old hat to us. We had our routine down.

We would watch the weather, waiting for the radar screen to see just how bad it might get. Once it was confirmed we sprung into action. My sister and brother would barrel out the door to go feed the animals and make sure they have shelter. Mom ran outside to put the cars in the shed, and I usually ended up bringing the laundry in off the line.

It was sweet organized chaos. [Read more…]

Truth, Dare… Or Both

It was pitch black. My flashlight beam bounced all around thanks to my shaky hand. I swallowed hard. There was no turning back. I had already accepted those fateful words:

“I dare you.”

I set out to accomplish my dare: cross a deserted country highway, in the dark, at 3am on a Sunday morning. It seemed simple enough, but to a group (gaggle? posse? flock?) of 7th grade girls, this was the dare of all dares. As I neared the middle of the road, I grew confident. “Pshaw. This is easy,” I thought to myself.

Suddenly, my friends start squawking and squealing. Headlights were coming. Sure, they were a good half-mile away, but WHO was driving on the road at 3am in the country? My heart raced. I turned and ran faster than I ever had in my life.  A jumble of screaming girls piled into the tent. We peeked out the zipper flap to make sure the car passed by.

But the car turned into the driveway.

We tried to stifle our screams of terror as waited to meet the unknown stranger that would surely be our demise… [Read more…]

Amateurs Wanted: Please Apply

In one of my former jobs, I was the gal who has hired/fired folks. In another job, I was the lady who helped people find jobs, get better jobs or go back to school.

When someone would be interested in a job, we would typically start with a conversation about previous work history, their resume, their skills, etc. We looked for qualifications and attitude. Sometimes it worked out. Other times… Not so much.

Fortunately… God has different standards than most employers. [Read more…]

Pobody’s Nerfect

When I was a pre-teen, I spent a few days every now and then working in a little country store back home. Jeanies was a tiny place with two booths and a menu that consisted of cold sandwiches or fried food. She also kept in stock the “necessities” for life, including milk, eggs and toilet paper. (Which was really convenient since the nearest town with a “real” grocery store was 20 miles away.)

On the cash register hung a sign with words I remember to this day:

“Pobody’s Nerfect.

It made me laugh. And still does. I love the irony of switching the first two letters to emphasize that true, nobody is perfect… even the maker of the sign. (I love ironic humor, just FYI.) [Read more…]

A “Sign” Of Faith

Hi there readers! I know, I know… It’s Friday and you don’t see the Five Minute Friday link-up logo… I am actually “unplugged” from all things technological for a few days to vacay with my beloved, so I’m not able to do the typical Five Minute Friday link up. (Even Jesus writers need a break, right?)

Instead, I want to challenge you to do your OWN Five Minute Friday– No, you don’t have to write anything. Instead, take just five minutes to reflect/pray/think on the following picture… It is a sweet sign that my wonderful Mother-in-Love Lex gave me a few months ago. It sits in my kitchen, right on my window sill. I read it everyday and it brings such hope to my heart. [Read more…]

Happy “Dependence” Day (And no, that’s not a typo)

In case you didn’t get the memo via the numerous Facebook posts, the shortage of hotdogs and burgers at the store, or the large late night explosive sounds…

It’s Independence Day. Happy 4th of July!

Today, we celebrate our freedom. What a blessing it is to live in the United States! (Somebody bring me a sparkler!!)

But even more than our patriotic freedom… Let’s celebrate our freedom in Christ. When He took His last breath on the cross, our chains were broken. We were no longer bonded by sin.

We have a hope and a future… And that’s even more awesome than fireworks and cookouts. [Read more…]

Think “Fast” Finale!

Oh how I missed you, my sweet tomato condiment. Welcome back.

Break out the ketchup and the frozen yogurt people! (Not together, please.) We made 30 days with only eating 7 foods.

Lemme tell you what. It was a long month. But a blessed one.

(To recap, check out last week’s update post here.)

Anywho, I am glad to say peace out to my only menu items of chicken, eggs, bread, apples, sweet potatoes, avocados, and spinach. I am excited to welcome back things like ketchup, dairy products and seasonings other than simply salt and pepper. [Read more…]

Operation “Fortitude” Fitness (Month #6)

I don’t know about you all… but I’m a little sweaty.

Ok, not sweaty at this very moment as I type, but I was sweaty earlier. (I showered. You are welcome.) This operation fortitude fitness business is sweaty work. Plus, it’s now July in Georgia.

Yikes. Can someone hand me a towel?

Anywho, June was a good month for my “Smart Changes” for 2012. (Click here to read the original post to get caught up to speed.) [Read more…]
