A Lil Rest Stop

I have to be honest.

I am really tired.

Actually, “weary” might be a more accurate word.

There’s a lot going on in our dear little Knobloch household, from my sweet husband’s crazy drill sergeant schedule to my bout with pneumonia (still ongoing), ministry, life decisions etc.

So yes, I’m weary.

I hope you can say that you are in a different season of life, but I am willing to bet AT LEAST one of you reading this today is just… blah. Tired. Spent. Worn. Sick and tired of being sick and tired.

So today, we are taking a little rest stop. Kind of like those convenient little buildings on the side of the interstate with the bathrooms, room to stretch our legs and vending machines. (And yes, this rest stop is going to be clean and classy.)

For today’s 7 Days Time moment, we are literally going to briefly STOP… and REST. A little pit stop in our day.

And I’m serious. Don’t roll your eyes and think it doesn’t apply to you. Even if you have never felt more energized in your life, a quick breather will do you good.

God told me so.

Take a moment to push play on the following little snippet from my iTunes library. (Or if you just want to sit in silence, that is cool too. Or pick your own tune. There’s no rules. Other than to do this. Please.) Seriously, take a moment to close your eyes and breath deeply– in the nose, out the mouth.

Ask the Lord to speak into your heart.

Let’s take a lil rest stop… before we continue with our day.

Unplugged

“Beep, beep, beep… We interrupt this program to bring you special weather announcement. The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the following counties…”

I’m from Kansas. And this little message was heard in our household on a pretty regular basis from the months of March to October. It was old hat to us. We had our routine down.

We would watch the weather, waiting for the radar screen to see just how bad it might get. Once it was confirmed we sprung into action. My sister and brother would barrel out the door to go feed the animals and make sure they have shelter. Mom ran outside to put the cars in the shed, and I usually ended up bringing the laundry in off the line.

It was sweet organized chaos.

In a few short minutes, just as the black clouds rolled in and the huge raindrops started to fall, we would all gather breathlessly back in the house. We made it.

The lightning struck and a few seconds later the thunder rolled. Suddenly, Mom remembered… “GET STUFF UNPLUGGED!” We needed to unplug major appliances, specifically the microwave and the computer.

Maybe you think we were paranoid… but just ask my Mom how many fried desktop computer’s she has been through in recent years. Those puppies aren’t cheap. A simple yank of the cord could prevent our wonderful data storage machine from turning into a large, dusty paperweight.

Unplugged

Last week, I was like that computer. God issued the announcement and told me to unplug before I fried myself. So I did.

It. Was. Awesome.

Now, for some of you folks, “unplugged” might not mean anything more to you than a TV show on MTV. But for a girl who spends a majority of her life blogging about Jesus (on a computer), responding to comments (on a computer), working on building a platform via social media (on a computer), unplugging is a big deal.

Brandon and I went on vacation last week. We camped, old school style, tent and all, no air conditioning, in a state park in Florida. We’ve never been there, and Brandon tried to convince me that we needed to take my iPad for navigational assistance.

I refused. Our printer was out of ink, so I hand wrote the mapquest instructions on a notebook sheet of paper. I knew that if I took my iPad, those little red email/Facebook/Twitter notifications would be tempting me all week long.

So I left every piece of technology at home. I even shut my cell phone completely off. (It’s not a smart phone, but unplugging means unplugging.) I checked my phone once a day to make sure everyone was still alive and didn’t reply to a single phone call or text.

Guess what? The sun still rose. Every. Single. Day.

I know I’ve talked about it before, but so many of our every day little things can turn into idols without us even knowing. I personally have to be very, very careful not to let technology/blogging/computeresque things consume my heart.

What seemingly innocent everyday items try to steal your attention from God? Have you “unplugged” recently? How did God move through that? I would love to hear all about it– leave a comment below!

Anywho, the break was great and I’m glad to be back. I could write ten blog posts about the incredible work God did in our lives during our time of being unplugged, regarding our relationship/marriage, grateful hearts and time to rest… But for now, I need to finish this post… And unplug for the rest of the day.

Refreshed not Fried,
SGK

“I’m asking God for one thing, only one thing: To live with him in his house my whole life long. I’ll contemplate his beauty; I’ll study at his feet. That’s the only quiet, secure place in a noisy world, The perfect getaway, far from the buzz of traffic.” ~Psalm 27:4-5

Sabbatical brought to you by: Generosity and Grace

Many of us have dreams of where we would like to visit or vacation. Perhaps the beach. Maybe the mountains. Or it could be somewhere ritzy.

For me… I just wanted… AWAY.

God called me to come away with Him this weekend. I had some incredible time alone, by myself, just Jesus and I in Pine Mountain, Georgia. He recharged my heart, mind and soul for doing His work. I could talk about the words He spoke to me for about a month’s worth of blog posts. But I will spare you all of the major details… For now. ;-) (Don’t worry– Thanks to this weekend, I’ve got plenty of new Jesus revelations to share AMERICA! )

But for this current moment, know that my sabbatical weekend was filled with generosity and grace.

At the risk of sounding like an award acceptance speech, this weekend wouldn’t have been possible without the following folks’ generosity:

  • Thank you to my dear friend Lauren for covering my duties at church on Sunday
  • Thank you to my  friend/boss/mentor Kelli for praying for me and encouraging me to be obedient to “Come away”
  • Thank you to my darling husband who provided the finances and encouragement to have my own “retreat” while he attended our church’s mens retreat.
  • Thank you to Debby and the Homestead Log Cabins family for being so generous and making this weekend financially feasible.

How I got hooked up with Homestead Log Cabins is a long (awesome) Jesus generosity story, but I will give you the semi-abbreviated version: As of last Thursday afternoon, I still hadn’t found anywhere to “go away” for the weekend. I knew I needed to be in nature since it is where I am closest to God, but I also knew He wanted me to rest. (Which is why sleeping in a tent wasn’t legit. It’s a TON of work to do by yourself. And a lot of planning.) I was getting desperate because no where I called had availability or was even remotely affordable for a woman (that would be me) working for Jesus dollars.

God laid Homestead Log Cabins on my heart earlier in the week as I had called them a few weeks ago when my cousin was down… but I knew it still cost dinero. But I was getting desperate. I pleaded with God during CRAVE on Thursday that if He really wanted me to come away for the weekend, He was going to have to make a way.

So at the nudging of God, I called Homestead Log Cabins. I talked to Debby and pretty much word vomited what I needed for the weekend. It wasn’t a vacation. It wasn’t a romantic getaway (although it was awesome to be with the Ultimate Lover of my Soul.) I simply needed a roof. And a bed. Out of town. AWAY.

After some quick negotiation with the manager, she gave me an incredibly generous deal for the weekend. I almost cried.

It was a sweet little three bedroom chalet on the lake. She said that she firmly believe that all of their reservations “Come through God.”

Isn't Jesus gorgeous??

Oh. Did I mention this adorable weekend home was owned by a preacher? Talk about divine intervention.

So long story still long, my weekend with Jesus was incredible. I left my laptop and iPad at home… and just sat at His feet. Thank you to Homestead Log Cabins for their incredible generosity (don’t be shy about booking them for your next Georgia getaway!) And thank you Jesus for a weekend full of grace.

Refreshed and Ready,
SGK
