Leftovers: Only For Eating (A Refresher)

As a new Momma… I am SUPER hungry. Like, all the time… And as I was thinking about a post to share with you all, this one popped into my head. It is one of the very first I wrote when we launched this ministry over a year and a half ago… And while my writing style might have evolved and developed, God’s message still stands firm.

Enjoy a fresh batch of God’s word– I promise His love is better than any leftovers you have waiting for you in the fridge.

On that note… I think I need a snack.

Chowing down with Christ,
SGK

****

Ready for a quick trip down memory lane? Sweet, let’s go. When I was growing up, one of my favorite foods was… (wait for it…) leftovers. Yes, we were the family that it was totally legit to eat the leftover lasagna from supper for breakfast the next day. I remember in middle school we were writing our “Newsletter” and did a survey of our tiny student body of their favorite “after school snack.” There was one write-in vote for “Leftovers.” Fortunately for me,  the surveys were anonymous and when everyone literally laughed out loud at the ridiculousness (practicality?) of the thought, I never owned up that twas I who wrote that as my favorite snack.

Let’s be honest, somethings are better leftover. My top picks: Homemade macaroni and cheese, chicken and dumplings, pizza, egg casserole, strawberry pretzel salad, German potato salad and anything involving chocolate. (Ok, chocolate is good fresh, leftover or licked off a plate– anything goes in that category.) Hold on… now I gotta run and take a snack break. (Just kidding)

As much as I still adore leftovers,  I do know someone who isn’t the biggest fan… God. He doesn’t want our leftovers. And sometimes, that can be hard! Most of us deal with some, all or a combination of the following on a daily basis: spouse, work, kids, bills, church, community activities, parents, siblings, homework, exercise, grocery shopping, sleep, (insert your own daily activities here). So the question is: Where does God fit?

Unlike our “shoved-to-the-back-of-the-fridge-leftovers,” God should be at the front of the list for a priority of things in our life. Exodus 23:19 says  “Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the Lord your God.” Now don’t miss construe what I am saying here. God DOES understand that we aren’t always going to be on our A-game, peppy as Saturday Night Live Spartan Cheerleaders. However, he does expect the BEST or “Firstfruits” of ourselves to be dedicated to him.

I know. Giving our firstfruits to Him can be hard. But just like we don't want bruised apples or mushy bananas... God wants our BEST.

I know. Giving our firstfruits to Him can be hard. But just like we don’t want bruised apples or mushy bananas… God wants our BEST.

“Firstfruits” is mentioned in the NIV 31 times… “Leftover” is only mentioned once. To me, that is an indication of what God expects from us. We can give the most and best of ourselves daily by our actions and our thoughts. I don’t know about you, but if I put off something until the end of the day, the less likely it is going to get done. Example: If I wait to have my quiet time with the Lord until after supper, something seems to be more likely to come up or cause distraction. Plus, I might be weary from the days hoopla and chaos, so I won’t be my “best.” I try to pray before I even get out of bed in the morning, asking God that whatever I do that day it may be to his glory. After all: “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24

Another and more “touchy” area of “firstfruits” and the non-leftovers issue is the idea of money, especially tithing. No where in the Bible does it say “Each time you get paid, wait til the end of that money then give me whatever you have leftover. Yep, that’ll be fine.” Instead it says Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.” (Proverbs 3:9-10) This is the great news– God isn’t asking to tithe back to Him because He “said so” and is on a power trip. Instead He has made us a PROMISE that if we show this act of faith and reverence to Him by giving our “firstfruits” He will let the returns overflow! If that’s not motivation to cut a check, I don’t know what is!

Bottom line: God doesn’t want our leftovers, whether it is in devotion, energy, love, money or service. He desires our firstfruits. Yes, it seems as if much is asked of us, but oh beloved, SO much more is given! It is our privilege to serve him in this way. “We also assume responsibility for bringing to the house of the Lord each year the firstfruits of our crops and of every fruit tree.” (Nehemiah 10:35)

Are you representing a beautiful, ripe, sweet piece of fruit right off the tree or a wilted lettuce salad leftover from the day(s) before? God desires our firstfruits, not our tupperware-clad-back-of-the-fridge leftovers. It tastes sweet to Him– but oh-so-sweeter for us!

To the Glory of God,

SGK

“As soon as the order went out, the Israelites generously gave the firstfruits of their grain, new wine, oil and honey and all that the fields produced. They brought a great amount, a tithe of everything.” – 2 Chronicles 31:5

Get Rich Quick…

Maybe it’s just me… but sometimes I still find myself being a little surprised/shocked at how many folks want to “make it big” and “get rich quick.”

Money

Every day, we encounter some kind of “great plan” giving us the chance to make some alleged fast cash. Now,  I’m sure some of those business schemes ideas are legit, but really, most just make me roll my eyes.

This blog post is not a slam against monetary success. We’ve talked about it before– Jesus never said money in itself was the root of evil. The LOVE of money is. Ultimately, our reaction to it determines the result.

It can bless. Or it can destroy. We get to choose.

Fortunately/unfortunately, a large majority of us will never be featured on the news for winning the MegaMillions. There’s been a couple of times this year where the lottery jackpot reached some ridiculous levels. Perhaps you remember (or bought a ticket?) All I know is that Facebook was blowing up with offers to “Like this ticket and we will split the pot with you” and my friends’ statuses jokingly (?) dreamed about what they would do with 550 million bucks.

As I drove home a couple of weeks ago, right before one of the big lotto drawings, I saw one of the billboards on the interstate updating the world on the current lottery dollar amounts. I let my mind wander for a moment– what would happen if I had that kind of cash?

Within seconds, my stomach flopped. I had no desire for the drama or challenge that come with dealing with that amount of cash. I’ve read too many stories of families crashing and burning after “making bank.”

Don’t get me wrong– there are some folks that do a great job of keeping a focus on Jesus while working their bucks for the good of the kingdom. But personally– I don’t know if I want that responsibility. Yikes.

Here’s the point… We don’t have to win the lotto to get rich quick.

We can find all the riches we need in Christ Jesus.

Seriously. The end. Bye-bye.

Just kidding.

But seriously. Christ IS all we need. With Jesus, it doesn’t matter if we have 20 cents in our pocket or 20 million in the bank. HE is all we need.

It’s Christmas and lately I’ve heard many folks stressing out about how they are going to make ends meet this month to make sure their kids/friends/families have the newest, neatest gadgets and toys.

That stresses ME out just thinking about it. SIGH. There’s nothing wrong with desiring to give to others– in fact, the Bible encourages it. But there’s a thin line between generosity with a heart of love and reckless consumerism just because we have a piece of magic plastic in our pocket with “Visa” written on it.

So I know it sounds cheesy, but this year, let’s ALL make an effort to keep our eyes on Jesus. He is the reason for the season. He’s already paid our debt. We don’t have to wait until payday to access Him. Unlike coupons, His value never expires.

With Him… We can get “rich”… every time.

High Rollin’ with the Most Holy,
SGK

Oh Look– Something Shiny! (Five Minute Friday)

Greetings all! It is Friday (whoot!) and if you have been hanging ’round these parts for a hot minute, you know that Fridays can only mean one thing…

Five Minute FridayProductivity is optional.

(Just kidding. If you are at work, you better get busy before your boss reads this over your shoulder and you end up having a “Come to Jesus” chat with him.)

But seriously. Fridays mean it is time for Five Minute Friday.

Each week, I link up with my friend Lisa-Jo Baker. She gives us a prompt and we free-write for five minutes flat. No over-thinking, no OCD perfectionistic editing.

Just go with it. Which I do believe is a perfect attitude for a Friday.

So my fingers are itching… Let’s do this.

Today’s prompt: FOCUS

Ready? GO!

*****

Books, pens and supplies are scattered around my work station. I am deep in thought, brow crinkling, eyes focused on the task at hand. Just a few more final…

OH LOOK! SOMETHING SHINY!!!!!!!

Sigh. Does this ever happen to you? I don’t know, maybe I’m the only one. (Although I kind of doubt it… No offense, just saying based on how my friends and I function, I don’t think I am alone in this.)

Keeping focus can be a full time job. Sure, when I am by myself and motivated, its pretty easy for me to work on a project or remain zeroed in on the task at hand until it is completed. But if I am around other people or I’m having “one of those days…” I find myself distracted by something shiny.

Those distractions can stem from procrastination (Oh, look, the kitchen floor is FILTHY! Better clean it before I sit down to work on my latest project.) Or perhaps just the buzzing culture that we have become accustomed to (I really need to check Facebook. Like, now. I mean, somebody could have gotten engaged or had a baby in the last 17 minutes.)

But sometimes the distractions that take away our focus are a little more intense. They can come from The Enemy as he tries to take our focus off of The One who is our everything in life.

Satan doesn’t just use inconveniences or “bad” things to rob our focus from following Christ. He oftentimes will use something good to distract us from God’s best. (But that’s another blog post.)

Focusing on what is TRULY important can be difficult. But let’s remember– if we are easily distracted by “something shiny,” God is the light of the world– and nothing gets “shinier” than that.

STOP!

****

Do you sometimes struggle with focusing on the important things in life (namely: God)? What “shiny” thing typically distracts you? How do you think we can stay on track and keep our focus clear? I always adore hearing your feedback. Leave a comment below.

Moving forward with focus,
SGK

Tuning Out: Media

“Sweetheart… HEELLLLLLOOOOOOOO!!!! Ahem. Can you please mute the TV so  I can talk to you?”

We live in a society that is consumed with media. Everywhere we look– there’s a TV, computer, phone, iPad, radio waiting to grab our attention.

Don’t get me wrong. Media can be REALLY productive. I mean seriously, this entire ministry is essentially media based.

However, media can also become a time-sucking, heart-focusing idol.

“Wait, wait, wait. An idol? Seriously, Sharita? My TV/phone/computer/iPad?? “

Yes, my friend. Seriously. According to dictionary.com, an idol is “any person or thing regarded with blind admiration, adoration, or devotion.”

Um yeah… This reason alone is why my sweet husband and I are currently in the middle of a media fast.

This idea was inspired via three different directions. First, by Jen Hatmaker’s book “7: The Experimental Mutiny Against Excess” (remember when we did the 7 foods fast a couple months ago?). Second, our pastor at church. And third?

Jesus. Let’s not forget Jesus.

A couple of weeks ago, media (TV specifically) suddenly became a source of contention in our marriage. It was dictating our time together, and between that and media in general, we started looking upon it with blind adoration and devotion.

Yeah, not OK.

So after some prayer, we decided to tune out– for a month.

Oh, and turning off the  TV isn’t the only piece of this puzzle… I have been limiting my time on Facebook to “business only” (as in, doing ministry and responding to important messages, but no browsing of other people’s business just to browse) as well as limiting time on Twitter. It is also my new policy not to check any source of media after my husband walks in the door from work. (Since he works as a drill sergeant, our time is so limited that it is dumb for me to be spending it on the computer and iPad when he is actually around.)

No TVs

We are over halfway done with our media fast– and here’s where we stand:

On the issue of TV: I am LOVING it. I jokingly(ish) said I would be ok with selling the TV. My sweet husband vetoed that in a hurry. Giving up TV (we only do DVD movies and Netflix anyways) is pretty easy for me. I’m not a TV watcher. Hardly ever. The hubby, on the other hand, is a pretty huge fan of it. So it has been probably more challenging for him than me.

On the issue of Facebook/Twitter/media in general: This one has been harder for me– it’s my time filler and primary news source. It has taken some serious self-control not to burn my time just messing on Facebook because I can.

However, it has been AWESOME for our relationship. We have had more legit conversations, spend more time with the Lord and read more books than ever before. It’s really great.

(Anyone want to buy a TV? Just kidding, Brandon.)

God spoke to me last week about what this could look like after the our minimal media fast ends… I won’t go into all the details (He was pretty specific) but here is the general idea…

* On Brandon’s work days: 1 hr of TV per day after he comes home, his choice of show OR if we agree on 1 movie together, that’s ok.
*NO Facebook/Twitter/Email checking for me when Brandon finishes his hour of TV time
*On days off: No more than 3 hrs of TV per day… and shows have to be dual choice of program/compromise so we can watch together
*When we aren’t together– use media only as necessary, ensuring that we have had adequate Jesus time beforehand.

I’ve loved our non-TV and minimal media time so far and am very excited to see how God continues to use this literal quiet time to shape our marriage and relationship with Him.

Are there any areas in your life that  distract or consume you or are on the verge of being an idol in your life? Is media an issue in your household? Or has it been before? How did you deal with it? What do you think of our experiment? I always love receiving your feedback– leave a comment below!

I am so thankful that God keeps us on track– tuned out to the “stuff” in life and tuned into Him.

I don’t needa-so-much-media,
SGK
