A Simple Gift… In case you forgot

I LOVE getting gifts. Even more so– I love giving gifts. Although it’s not my primary love language– sometimes it sneaks its way to the top. And over the last year and a half or so of blogging and doing online ministry (time flies!) we have continually mentioned God’s great gifts– big and small. (In fact, I continue to work on my 1000 gift list inspired by Ann Voskamp’s book. As of this post, I am over 1500 and still going strong!)

The other day, I was digging through some of my archived blogs– and ran across this one. It made me laugh– and encouraged my heart… so I though that re-sharing it was in order.

I pray it speaks to you– so read, share, comment, enjoy. You know the drill.

Oh– and thanks for being such a blessing and gift in MY life, dear reader!

Jesus Fist Pound,
SGK

gift

Gifts can come in many, many forms from that engagement ring promising a lifetime of commitment to that forced smile when we open up a “fashionable” sweater from Grandma. God’s gifts also come in many shapes, sizes and colors…

I ran across the following a few weeks ago when working on a project for church and was reminded of it today. The Lord loved us enough to create laughter and allow us to feel joy in our heart. (That’s a gift) He has also given us GRACE. (There’s another one) Sometimes he combines them. (One of my favorite gifts! )

How to Get Into Heaven

A woman dies and meets St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. Peter says to the woman, “Here’s how it works. You need to have one hundred points to get into heaven. You tell me about all the good things you’ve done. They are all worth a certain number of points. If your total is 100 or more, you can come in.”

“Well,” says the woman. “I was happily married to the same man for 52 years. I never looked at another man. I was attentive and loved him dearly.”

“That’s great,” says St. Peter. “That’ll be two points.”

“Hmmm,” says the woman. “This is going to be harder than I thought. Well, I attended church regularly, volunteered my time and tithed faithfully.”

“Wonderful,” says St. Peter, “That’s worth another point.”

“One point!” says the woman. “Okay, okay. I was involved with a woman’s prison ministry for twenty-five years. I went into the prison, at least monthly, and shared Jesus with them.”

“Wow!” says St. Peter. “That’s another two points!”

“Only two points!” says the woman. “At this rate, it’ll be only by the grace of God that’ll I’ll ever get into this place.”

“Bingo!” says St. Peter. “That’s 100 points! Come on in.”

Praise God for the gift of His grace… because just like this example above, we can’t earn our way into heaven– but he has given us that nonrefundable present. It seems like such a simple gift with no fancy wrapping paper or ribbon, but instead by the body of Christ.  That alone means so much!

No Receipt Needed,
SGK

Caution: Extra Grace Required

CAUTION: Extra Grace Required

Well all have them in our lives.

You know them well.

In fact, all of us probably ARE these kinds of people from time to time.

That’s right. Those folks in your life who try your patience. That require prayer to deal with. Sometimes the mere sight of them makes your heart race.

They are EGR’s: Extra Grace Required.

Now, I don’t say this to be mean or judgey. Heck, I KNOW for a fact that I personally am an EGR from time to time. (Just ask my husband.) I get snarky. I become hard to manage. Some switch gets flipped and I go from low-key minister to high-maintence heifer. True story.

Been there. Done that. Deal with it daily.

This challenge of EGR’s in my life has really been on my heart (and in my face) lately. It has challenged my patience. Been a constant reminder that we must deal with all people with GRACE. And not just, some grace- lots of it. Often, EXTRA grace is required.

You know the kinds of people that I am talking about. (In addition to our occasional selves.) Those folks who can’t seem to find the good in anything. The ones who repeatedly flake on commitments with no advance warning. Or people who struggle with drawing the line between wanting to talk-talk-talk in circles when the other party perhaps has a meeting to get to. Like, now.

When we are faced with EGRs, our flesh naturally wants to word vomit something blunt or brash. (Or just physically push them out the way. Admit it– we’ve all felt it.) But the moment that thought flashes across our mind, we feel a surge of conviction from the Holy Spirit. “Um, Sharita, that behavior is not nice. Even more so, it’s not Christ-like.”

Sigh. Stupid flesh.

Don’t get me wrong– as Christians, we sure aren’t expected to be pushovers and let folks walk all over us. However, we are to deal with people with GRACE. Just as Christ did.

He was firm with people, especially when they were getting Him off track or inadvertently distracting Him from doing the Father’s Will. However, He was never mean. Never rude. Never sarcastic.

He always spoke the truth– IN LOVE. He kept on track with God-Focus. And He dealt with those EGR’s with GRACE. Lots and lots of grace.

When it comes to dealing with EGRs in real life (ministry or otherwise) I have come up with another acronym to keep us focused on the matter at hand.

Instead of snapping or pretending to be uninterested, apply your own method of EGR in these Extra Grace Required situations.

E~ Explore the opportunity. Specifically for ministry opportunities in the moment. Sometimes those EGR’s could be ministry experiences brought to us by God in disguise. Or simply approach the opportunity with a heart for personal growth, knowing that challenges are what ultimately refine us to become more like Christ.

G~Get moving. (I don’t mean run away. That’s not nice.) But get your heart moving closer to the Holy Spirit with a silent prayer, asking for wisdom and discernment (and grace!) for the moment.

R~ Remember the abundant grace that God gives us every time we try His patience (which, if we are perfectly honest with ourselves, is probably once every 14 seconds.) Then, take the Father’s grace and extend it to the person/situation you are dealing with… THEN react.

What kind of EGR’s challenge you the most? How do you deal in the moment? Gimme a shout out by leaving a comment below!

God is always patient with us– He is firm and just but eternally loving. He has given us abundant grace to love those around us… So no matter how challenging the person or situation, remember that we already have all the extra grace that is required for the moment… We just have to apply it!

Thankful for His Grace,
SGK

Check your Gauge (Five Minute Friday)

It’s time for Five Minute Friday. (I will give you a moment to collect yourself.)

FMF is a great exercise, just to write– for five minutes flat, not stressing about grammar and commas, not overthinking the process or the message.
Five Minute Friday
Just write. Then we link up with Lisa-Jo.

Easy, huh? (Just what we need on a low-key Friday!)

Let’s do this.

Today’s prompt: GRACEFUL

Anddddd GO!

******

I was that kid. You know the one. That girl who trips over the nearly invisible cracks in the sidewalk. The gal who once fell UP the stairs so badly that she was bruised and barely able to walk for a week.

Oh, and I’m still that girl. (Sidenote: being pregnant has not helped– in the last week and a half, I have dropped and broke an entire bottle of salsa, a jar of tabasco sauce and a jar of mayo <the mayo was in a plastic bottle, thank goodness.)

I am NOT graceful. I’ve tried. It just isn’t happening for me.

But regardless of my inability to walk up the stairs and put away salsa, I do have hope.

I am grace-full.

See, we all have a chance, no matter what our level of coordination, to be grace-full. All it takes is a lot of faith from us and never-ending love from a great God.

His grace is enough… to keep us going day after day, when we fall short (either literally or figuratively), to give us a hope and a future.

Without His daily grace, our lives are empty.

So it doesn’t matter if you are the most coordinated-gymnast-dancer-I-got-smooth-moves-person in the world, or a salsa-dropping-stair-tripping-sinner like me. Regardless,  it’s time we check our God-gauge…

Are you running on empty? Or are you grace-full?

STOP!!

****

As always, I am so thankful that you stopped by. Let me know you were here by leaving a quick comment with your reaction. (Comments are my favorite part of the blogging journey.)

Until Monday– may you be overwhelmed with His grace.

From empty to grace-full,
SGK

“However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace.” ~Acts 20:24

Who I Am

Happy September, all!

Oh, and Happy Labor Day.

So, here’s the deal. I’m just gonna be straight up with you today. (Actually, I hope I am ALWAYS straight up with you… but today might be straighter than normal. Ha.)

At the beginning of a new month, typically I update you all on my SMART goals for 2012. I’ve been working on this list since January, and asked you to be my accountability partner.

Well partner, August was kind of a wash. As in, I was only able to be “normal” for literally three days of the entire month. Sure, it’s a small price to pay for the opportunity to participate in the coolest Jesus arts and crafts projects ever (aka, growing a teeny baby as we add to our family) but the fact that I got pneumonia PLUS another gross cold virus bug somethingorother on top of it  knocked me down. Hard.

It’s been a month and I am just now getting back on my feet.

So August I was unable to work out (most days it was a huge victory for me to maybe change from PJs to other comfy clothes and simply get out of bed.)  Also, my brain was below normal functioning levels since I was so sick/tired/etc.

I REALLY struggled with this for a few weeks. As in, worried about it, was very anxious and stressed (and annoyed) that I wasn’t able to do anything I normally would do…

And then God reminded me that my value, worth and identity is NOT in WHAT I do, but WHO I am in Christ.  (By the way– the same goes for you. Just saying.)

So if it’s ok with you, we are going to disregard August and pick up from where we left off  for the month of September… I’m not going to worry about it.

Oh, and speaking of not worrying… Next week we start an online bible study right here at 7 Days Time. It is called “Calm My Anxious Heart: A Woman’s Journey to Contentment.” We are super-duper excited for this experience and it’s not too late for you to join in this journey. Just leave a comment below if you would like to participate and I will get you hooked up.

On that note… I do believe it is time for me to use this Labor Day– to relax. Not worry. Be content. And celebrate that our identity is NOT in what we do but who we are in Christ.

Can I get an amen?

Laboring in Christ,
SGK

“Day and night you’re in our prayers as we call to mind your work of faith, your labor of love, and your patience of hope in following our Master, Jesus Christ, before God our Father.” 1 Thessalonians 1:3 (MSG)

A Patriotic Reveal

Today’s blog post is brought to you by little green army men, our pup Sweet Justus and a fun sense-of-humor-laden family project…

Praise Jesus!  I am so thankful that I can now share with all of you wonderful readers our “secret.” (I felt like I was leading a double life there for a little while.) It’s been a challenging first three months, especially learning how to be preggo plus pneumonia AND another nasty bug on top of it all (three rounds of antibiotics are now complete!)

We praise God for His faithfulness… When I told my friend Brandi a couple weeks ago about our Little Patriot, she used the phrase “bittersweet.” And that is a pretty good descriptor of the last 14 weeks or so– although, now that I think about it, it’s not been so much bitter, but perhaps “apprehensively-sweet.” We will never forget our sweet Baby Klove, but are very excited for this hopeful  journey into parenthood with Little Patriot.

In this tiny, new life, God has revealed His Love. His Hope. His Grace. His Faithfulness.

So, we rejoice. Won’t you join us?

Glory to God,
SGK

“This new life is starting right now, and is whetting our appetites for the glorious day when our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, appears.” ~Titus 2:12 (MSG)

The Rule of 4.0

“Moooommmm… I… didn’t…do…good…on… (sob)…my (gasp)… Chemistry… (sniff)…tessssttttttt. I…won’t…get…an.. A!”

That is a real (ok, paraphrased) excerpt from a conversation that I frequently had with my Mom on the phone my freshmen year of college at K-State.

Chemistry was a nightmare. And when I bombed that first test, I was convinced my life was over. Seriously. Up until that point, I had only gotten a “B” on a report card ONCE in my life, and that was my freshmen year of high school in Algebra. (What IS it with freshmen year? And boo on math.)

I despised chemistry. (And still do, just for the record.) I didn’t understand it. I didn’t get it. And I didn’t get an A that semester. What a way to start out my college career, huh?

My friends and I had a theory in college. We called it the “Rule of 4.0.” The idea was that there were many things in life that once you fell short, it was hard to care about trying to work hard at it again.

Chemistry class was my example. After I got that first “B” in college, I knew there was no hope of pulling a 4.0. My record was marred. So I had a choice to make… would I keep trying to do well in college? Or since I had fallen short of my dreams of “perfect” grades, should I just sorta half-way try and count it all as lost?

Fortunately, my motivation kicked in and I kept trying. No, I didn’t get my 4.0 due to falling short early on (Thanks, Chem I and II…) But I did manage to graduate with honors five years later. (I took a victory lap for my undergrad, just because I could.)

Now you might be wondering: “Uh, Sharita, I am kind of done with school. What in the name of sodium chloride does this have to do with me?”

Great question. I’m glad you asked. The “Rule of 4.0″ doesn’t just apply to literal grade point averages. It also applies to different areas of our lives. For example…

The Rule of 4.0 kicks in during a long-distance run after you made the mental decision to walk for a few steps… You failed right? Whats the point of trying to redeem your run? Might as well walk the rest of the way, yes?

The Rule of 4.0 applies when it comes to purity… maybe a girl (or guy) decided to engage in pre-marital sex with a significant other, but then they broke up. She/he isn’t “pure” anymore. So what’s the point of abstaining from that point forward until marriage?

The Rule of 4.0 shows up when we get reprimanded at work– we weren’t the perfect employee, so why strive to regain a solid work ethic, right?

The Rule of 4.0 comes to life in our everyday lives when we sin. We messed up… so why try to make it right and live a Christ-like life? We failed.

Obviously, this way of thinking can be a dangerous and little off the mark. The Rule of 4.0 is meant to be an encouragement to think twice about making a decision that might damage your heart, your GPA, relationships or work life. HOWEVER… like it or not, we are ALL going to fall short.

None of us are going to graduate from this life to the next with a 4.0 without the help of Christ.

Will you allow Christ to help you “graduate” from this life to the next with a 4.0?

We might get a B or C in life… or we might even flunk on occasion. God grades on a curve. And that curve is in form of The Cross.

We have the beautiful and blessed opportunity to start fresh every single day, reaching out to Christ for that 4.0 perfect score. Each time we give an incorrect answer or fall short, we can take it to The Cross and learn from the ultimate teacher.

Christ is our Valedictorian. He is the one who will help us graduate summa cum laude. He is the one to restore us to our 4.0.

Here’s to “graduating” with Honors,
SGK

“If your life honors the name of Jesus, he will honor you. Grace is behind and through all of this, our God giving himself freely, the Master, Jesus Christ, giving himself freely.”
–2 Thessalonians 1:12 (MSG)

PS: Where have you needed Christ to grade on a curve in your life? Have you struggled with the “Rule of 4.0?” I would love to hear your thoughts. Leave a comment below.

Sabbatical brought to you by: Generosity and Grace

Many of us have dreams of where we would like to visit or vacation. Perhaps the beach. Maybe the mountains. Or it could be somewhere ritzy.

For me… I just wanted… AWAY.

God called me to come away with Him this weekend. I had some incredible time alone, by myself, just Jesus and I in Pine Mountain, Georgia. He recharged my heart, mind and soul for doing His work. I could talk about the words He spoke to me for about a month’s worth of blog posts. But I will spare you all of the major details… For now. ;-) (Don’t worry– Thanks to this weekend, I’ve got plenty of new Jesus revelations to share AMERICA! )

But for this current moment, know that my sabbatical weekend was filled with generosity and grace.

At the risk of sounding like an award acceptance speech, this weekend wouldn’t have been possible without the following folks’ generosity:

  • Thank you to my dear friend Lauren for covering my duties at church on Sunday
  • Thank you to my  friend/boss/mentor Kelli for praying for me and encouraging me to be obedient to “Come away”
  • Thank you to my darling husband who provided the finances and encouragement to have my own “retreat” while he attended our church’s mens retreat.
  • Thank you to Debby and the Homestead Log Cabins family for being so generous and making this weekend financially feasible.

How I got hooked up with Homestead Log Cabins is a long (awesome) Jesus generosity story, but I will give you the semi-abbreviated version: As of last Thursday afternoon, I still hadn’t found anywhere to “go away” for the weekend. I knew I needed to be in nature since it is where I am closest to God, but I also knew He wanted me to rest. (Which is why sleeping in a tent wasn’t legit. It’s a TON of work to do by yourself. And a lot of planning.) I was getting desperate because no where I called had availability or was even remotely affordable for a woman (that would be me) working for Jesus dollars.

God laid Homestead Log Cabins on my heart earlier in the week as I had called them a few weeks ago when my cousin was down… but I knew it still cost dinero. But I was getting desperate. I pleaded with God during CRAVE on Thursday that if He really wanted me to come away for the weekend, He was going to have to make a way.

So at the nudging of God, I called Homestead Log Cabins. I talked to Debby and pretty much word vomited what I needed for the weekend. It wasn’t a vacation. It wasn’t a romantic getaway (although it was awesome to be with the Ultimate Lover of my Soul.) I simply needed a roof. And a bed. Out of town. AWAY.

After some quick negotiation with the manager, she gave me an incredibly generous deal for the weekend. I almost cried.

It was a sweet little three bedroom chalet on the lake. She said that she firmly believe that all of their reservations “Come through God.”

Isn't Jesus gorgeous??

Oh. Did I mention this adorable weekend home was owned by a preacher? Talk about divine intervention.

So long story still long, my weekend with Jesus was incredible. I left my laptop and iPad at home… and just sat at His feet. Thank you to Homestead Log Cabins for their incredible generosity (don’t be shy about booking them for your next Georgia getaway!) And thank you Jesus for a weekend full of grace.

Refreshed and Ready,
SGK
