Dressed for Battle

I love routine.

ESPECIALLY my morning routine.

Depending on which day of the week it is, as in if I am working from home or will be going into church to work, here’s the general thought on how it goes.

Wake up. Take a deep breath. Release my day to God before my crazy-lady achiever brain takes over thinking of the 40 million things I want to accomplish during the day. (This step took practice. As in, lots of practice.) Say a little prayer for the coming day. Hoist myself out of bed. Unplug/grab my cell phone. Quick stop at the bathroom. (Sorry– is that TMI? We all do it.) Check self in the mirror. Result? Disheveled hair and sleepy eyes. Brush teeth. Turn off the ceiling fan and trot (plod? stumble) downstairs.

As I enter the bottom floor of our house, I let our pup out of his kennel and tell him good morning, laughing at how he stretches. I let Justus out into the backyard and scrounge for breakfast. I let our pup back in and st down for quiet time with aforementioned breakfast.

After those very specific steps, my routine usually changes up a bit. If I am working from home, I might stay parked in my chair with my computer for a while, working away on my Jesus to-do list with emails, blogging, etc. But if it’s an “at church” work day… I must make myself presentable for the public world to see (or at least tolerate.)

I tell you all of these details because it’s all part of a daily routine– but as important as it is to brush my teeth, eat breakfast and brush my hair, (you are welcome) the most important part comes as we are “getting dressed” for battle each day. Granted, I have the luxury of not having to physically get all dressed up and groomed daily (thank you, Jesus) but you can bet your keister I know that whether we are called to work from home, church, a business, school, whatever– that we ALL need to put on our armor for battle.

See, our enemy (and/or his minions) are always lurking, waiting to pounce on us like a lion. To take us down. To distract us from the path that God has laid out for us in the day.

Just like our morning routines from getting out of bed to picking out an outfit to packing a lunch, we must be prepared for battle. Every. Single. Day.

As of late, I have been memorizing part of Ephesians 6. (This goes along with My One Word for 2013… because it has the word “Stand” in it several times.)  Ephesians 6:14-17 says this:

“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

There are so many different methods of getting dressed for battle each day, from quiet time to prayer to meditation to making a list of things you are thankful for to reading the word… the list goes on and on.

What does your daily battle-prep look like? What parts of God’s armor are most important for YOU to wear in your current season of life? Which ones “fit” the best? Which are most “uncomfortable” or hard to remember to put on? Feel free to join the conversation by leaving a comment below.

Dear friends and readers– getting dressed for battle daily isn’t just a routine. It’s a necessity. We don’t leave the house without wearing pants. (At least I hope not.) So why should we neglect putting on His armor and picking up the weapons His gives us to fight the good fight?

It’s time. Let’s get suited up. This. Means. War.

Suited up and Ready to Rock,

“Fight the good fight of the faith…” ~1 Timothy 6:12

Ok. Honestly, I don't look like this every day (thank goodness.) But you get the picture. Watch out, Satan-- Jesus has got our backs!!

Working Overtime

Sundays are said to be a day of rest. I fully believe this. However, it can be a little challenging if you are in ministry.

Oh, and before you count yourself out of this, ALL of us are ministers. If you go to church, serve at church (on Sunday or any other day of the week), serve in your community, or are an active Christian listen up.

Most Sundays, I am up by 6am to get ready for my day. I might serve/work anywhere from 3 to 14 hours at church on any given Sunday. (True story.) But here’s the confession: Sometimes I don’t wanna.

I will give you a second to pick your jaw up off the ground.

Don’t get me wrong– I love my Lord and I love my job. But it can be HARD and EXHAUSTING job sometimes. (Side note: It’s super important to take a Sabbath another day of the week to recover and prevent burn out.)

It’s also important to know that His followers aren’t the only ones working overtime… The Enemy is clocked in, working against us, trying to keep us from bringing glory to God.

I think that is why it is such a battle for so many to roll out of bed and actually GO to church, regardless if it is to serve or worship. See, we not only have our flesh working against us thinking “Just five more minutes” which soon turns into “It’s OK if I skip church today– I will pray extra hard this week,” Satan is helping that process along as well.

This isn’t a post to condemn or cause guilt. I mean seriously, there have been more days than I would like to admit when I have to literally say out loud on a Sunday morning “Get behind me Satan! Help me Jesus to get motivated to serve YOU!”

I really just want to make you aware that Satan is working overtime, trying to prevent the great work that God has in store for us to accomplish for Him.

Unfortunately, The Enemy is pretty stinkin’ good at his job. Sigh. (Won’t somebody fire that guy, already?)

Sometimes, that jerkface starts working overtime on me the night before. Saturday evening can bring ridiculous thoughts of “Oh man, I have to get up at _ o’clock tomorrow” or “I really don’t want to meet with _____, I want to just chill.”

Ludicrous thoughts, I tell you. Fortunately, God always comes through for me. And once I get to church and “clock in” (figuratively speaking of course– we are all on duty, all the time of course!) the power, love and motivation I feel are simply unexplainable.

When we take a step of faith, whether it is volunteering at church or sharing our faith, we have a big, fat, red target on our back. And Satan takes aim. However, if we listen to The One, He is ALWAYS victorious. He gives us the weapons and tools we need to fight. To serve. To win.

When do you struggle most to find motivation? What gets you going? How does God equip you to work overtime when Satan is in hot pursuit? I would love to hear about it… Leave a comment below, my sweet reader!

It’s a new week. Time to start fresh. Keep in mind that being a Christian isn’t easy. But it’s worth it. Satan isn’t the only one working overtime. So is Christ. And I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t ask for a better boss, defender and lover.

Be faithful and our eternal paycheck will reflect our efforts of working overtime in the name of Christ.

Clocking In,

Real Time Warriors for Christ (Vlog: Factor of 7)

It has finally happened. I have finally gotten the guts to take a leap in to the “Vlogging” world.

For all of you newbies to the techie world (don’t worry, I only learned the term “vlog” about a month ago) “Vlog” is a simply a video plus a blog. Get it? Vlog. (I think Blideo would have been an interesting choice as a close second for techie terminology.)

Anywho… My beloved husband joined me on my inaugural vlog attempt. We were finally forced to get to crack-a-lacking on this mission after a local pastor saw the article in The Bayonet about our Latte Love Factor of 7. Pastor Heather contacted us saying that our ministry was an “answer to her prayers” as she is heading up a kids camp this summer with the theme of “Real Warriors for Christ.” The whole idea stems around defending our faith everyday, right where we are. Which is exactly what Factor of 7 is all about.

She asked if we could record a short video to share at the camp… and Voilà! A vlog was born! (I am all about doing the whole two birds, one stone business.)

So welcome to our first attempt at vlogging. (Oh, and don’t worry… we don’t talk for the entire time. There is a rather humorous interlude smack dab in the middle of this vlog.)

If you cannot view this video in your email, click here.

We would LOVE your feedback! Please leave a comment below! (And don’t be shy about sharing our video message about our mission with folks in your life. Hint, hint, wink, wink, nudge, nudge.)

Fighting on the Frontline,
SGK (and Brandon)
