Finders Keepers

Hey all! It’s Friday, so here’s the dealio…

I link up with Lisa-Jo Baker for Five Minute Friday. Five Minute Friday

We write. For five minutes.

No over thinking or excessive editing. We just go with it.

Let’s get this party started.

Todays Prompt: CHANGE

Annnddd… GO!!!!

******

I can hear the hum and occasional clank of our washer and dryer in nearly room of our house. It’s a new model, but when you are regularly washing army gear, laundry is not a quiet experience.

However, it’s important.

There have been a few “close calls” in our household when my beloved comes home late, but still needs his clothes washed for the next day. (And by next day, I really mean when he goes back to work in four hours.)

Praise the Lord my beloved is a man who knows how and plus/minus does his own laundry. But sometimes, we forget a very important step.

To change it over when that fateful washer timer buzzes.

Personally, few things are more disheartening than getting ready for work and realizing that the washer is still full of wet laundry– that we need to wear immediately.

Fortunately, this is an easy fix. Just change it over.

The concept of changing things around doesn’t just apply to laundry. Change is important in our life. When we change, we are growing– even though sometimes growing pains are, well, painful.

I love the feeling of changing my hairstyle… of course sometimes it doesn’t go as planned. (i.e. see my senior pictures from HS) The challenge of changing to a new state/home/neighborhood every 2 to 5 years as an army family provides initial nerves but a thrill of adventure…

And strengthening of our faith.

We can embrace the change in our world because we have the chance to follow a NEVER-changing God. He’s always constant. Always faithful. Always there to guide us as we change, adapt and grow.

Change in life can be a very good thing, just like when we remember to switch over the laundry from the washer to the dryer. We get fresh dry clothes.

And if we are really lucky? We get a little bit of BONUS loose change left in the bottom… and we all know the rule with those kind of surprises… finders keepers.

STOP!

***

What did you think my friends? What kind of change challenges you most in life? When have you embraced change and found that “bonus” surprise after it was all said and done? How does God keep you growing? I would love to hear all about it. Leave a comment below!

Til we meet again on Monday… May you be richly blessed!

Change is a good thing,

A Patriotic Reveal

Today’s blog post is brought to you by little green army men, our pup Sweet Justus and a fun sense-of-humor-laden family project…

Praise Jesus!  I am so thankful that I can now share with all of you wonderful readers our “secret.” (I felt like I was leading a double life there for a little while.) It’s been a challenging first three months, especially learning how to be preggo plus pneumonia AND another nasty bug on top of it all (three rounds of antibiotics are now complete!)

We praise God for His faithfulness… When I told my friend Brandi a couple weeks ago about our Little Patriot, she used the phrase “bittersweet.” And that is a pretty good descriptor of the last 14 weeks or so– although, now that I think about it, it’s not been so much bitter, but perhaps “apprehensively-sweet.” We will never forget our sweet Baby Klove, but are very excited for this hopeful  journey into parenthood with Little Patriot.

In this tiny, new life, God has revealed His Love. His Hope. His Grace. His Faithfulness.

So, we rejoice. Won’t you join us?

Glory to God,
SGK

Treasure in Jars of… Salsa??

Today, I would like to provide you with a practical, real-life lesson and application:

How to Semi-Effectively Clean Up A Smashed Jar of Salsa

1. Take a deep breath, close your eyes and say a silent prayer for the Lord to forgive you of the very loud and prominent obscenity you just yelled as you watched your new quart jar of homemade salsa crash onto the floor.

2. Shuffle the pup out of doors so he is not inclined to “help” with clean up.

3. Put on shoes as to avoid glass shards in the feet.

4. Clean up the glassy salsa with whatever tools you have available (might I recommend: An old dust pan and empty Diet Dr. Pepper box)

5. Mop and/or vacuum a couple times to ensure any nearly invisible tiny glass shards don’t, in fact, end up in your feet.

6. Continue with your lunch and ask God how or what you can learn from this experience. (Other than don’t let clumsy people with wet hands handle salsa jars when they are in a hurry to eat their nachos for lunch.)

This is what my treasured jar of salsa looked like BEFORE it hit the floor…
Clean up on aisle 3! Anyone? No? Sigh.

True story, folks. As I was moving towards step 6, I stepped into the bathroom to wash my hands. I looked in the mirror and literally laughed– in the few minutes of my salsa-crisis, my cheeks were flushed, my messy ponytail became messier and I somehow ended up with a bird feather in my hair. (I’m not kidding. The only explanation would be when I went outside to get the old dustpan, a tiny little feather made its way to my bird nest of hair.)

As I was trying to gather my nerves and frustration (hey, homemade salsa from back home is a treasured commodity down in these parts!) I literally prayed for God to tell me what I could learn from this…

My brain immediately flashed to 2 Corinthians 4:7~

“We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.”

Huh. Ok, Lord. Cool.

So I sat with that for a while and realized that my little salsa mess was not just a mess– it was a sweet (spicy?) message.

That jar of salsa brought me to scripture that reminded me that when we try to be perfect on the outside, God’s power and goodness can’t be seen. So we either have to be very transparent (think: glass jar of salsa) or allow God to crack open our shell of perfection so that His inner light can shine.

As I marinated on this idea (and continued to mourn the loss of my salsa) my thoughts were drawn to the upcoming bible study that we are hosting here at 7 Days Time. In case you missed our big announcement last week, starting Sept. 9th my friend Kelli and I are going to be teaching Linda Dillow’s study “Calm My Anxious Heart: A Woman’s Guide to Finding Contentment” in person at Christ Community Church. But for all of my non-local peeps, (which is a vast majority) we are going to do an online version of the study starting September 10th.

And I don’t know about you– but one of the things that sometimes makes me anxious is being vulnerable and letting other people see my brokenness.

Kinda like that messy jar of salsa on my kitchen floor.

So, if your life has ever felt more frustrating than of dropping a jar of salsa (or pickles, or jelly or whatever) on the floor, or you worry about others finding out about your shortcomings, or you struggle to find contentment in your everyday life… we invite you to join our study.

For the online portion, we will meet here each Monday and also interact in  a closed Facebook group. Should you like to join in our journey, be sure to order the book ($10 on Amazon) and leave a comment below so I can be sure to include you as our start date grows closer.

Oh, and even if your time/schedule doesn’t permit you to actually DO the study with us– feel free to leave comments and participate here anyways. We are all in this together!

After all, we all learn in a variety of ways from a variety of sources– even from a broken jar of salsa.

Using my mess for His Message,

SGK

For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.” ~2 Corinthians 4:6 NLT

When Stuck is a Good thing (Five Minute Friday)

Everybody know what time it is?

(If your first instinct was to say “TOOL TIME” that’s fine, but you would be incorrect. :-) )

It’s time for Five Minute Friday.

In short: Each Friday, I link up with Lisa-Jo Baker. She gives us a prompt. Then we write. For five minutes flat, no over thinking, no editing.

Simple as that.
Five Minute Friday
So, whaddya say– let’s do this!

Todays prompt: JOIN

Ready? GO

******

I keep my eyes locked, with focus few have witnessed. My fingers shake, as I try to get the tiny drop of super glue right…where…I…need…

Suddenly, I flinch. The glue misses the target by a hair, and plops on my thumb. My first instinct? Rub it off.

Usually with another finger.

Sigh. Now my fingers are instantly stuck together. I panic and pull them apart. OW!! I know that for the next day or so, I am going to have the crusty remnants of super glue stuck on my fingers. (And the drop that landed on my pants? Yeah, gonna be there forever.)

It amazes me that sometimes when we try to join something together, we miss completely and end up making a big ol’ mess.

But when God calls us to join with Him, it’s never a mistake.

We have the blessing, privilege, opportunity, whatever you want to call it, to walk with God EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. We can join together… from here to eternity.

And should we ever try to pull away from Him? Yeah, it’s gonna be more painful that trying to remove our super-glued fingers from each other.

God’s path for us, while not always understandable or clear to us, always takes us to the perfect target. The one He has planned for us.

So let’s join up with Jesus today, utilize our “spiritual superglue” and forever stick with Him.

Because sometimes… Being stuck is a good thing.

STOP!

***

That concludes another word-flowing, adrenaline filled Five Minute Friday. What did you think my friends? Are stuck on Jesus today? How do you stay close with Him? I always love the comments. Leave one below. Holla!

Have a wonderful weekend– may it be blessed!

Opposition & Obedience

“Hi. My name is Sharita, and I have issues with obedience.”

(Insert chorus of “HI SHARITA” here.)

Sigh. Maybe I’m the only one… But my stubborn, driven nature sure provides opposition to my call to be obedient to the Lord.

I’m dealing with that right now. The seasons of our life in our family are changing and I think I am in denial. I had a good groove going, and now God is shaking up my little snow globe life, changing things all around.

I don’t mind change. I really don’t. Only I was really digging the chug-a-lug of the way things were.

However, He’s calling me out. And as I try to listen, I am faced with opposition from a variety of directions. Here’s a little opposition list, in no particular order.

1. The world. This wonderful (fallen-sigh) world that we live in is all about success, cash, being driven, self-gratification, more-is-more mentality. But all of that goes against the principles that Christ laid out before us. It makes things complicated.

2. The enemy. Oh yeah, can’t forget about this jerkface. The author of destruction and confusion gets all up in my grill, wreaking havoc on best intentions. This sneaky punk has a way with selling little half truth-lies to my brain/heart. And let’s not forget that Satan has a tendency to use GOOD things to distract us from GOD’S BEST. Have I mentioned that he is REALLY good at his job?

3. Myself. This is probably the biggest issue that I face. My flesh. My brain. My will. Me, me, ME. The first two opposing factors of obedience really accentuate the challenges that I have with the “Me factor.” However, as of late, God has really convicted me (again)… And here’s why…

As I mentioned in a previous post, I am very excited about the fact that this sweet blog/ministry is over a year old. I was stoked that I was able to blog plus/minus five days per week for a year. But in the last several weeks, God has spoken to me and called me to go something of a different direction with gentle (but heart-tugging) reminders like:

“Remember daughter, you are NOT defined by what you do, but by WHO you are in Christ.”

“Be Still… And Know… That I AM Lord.”

“When you work, remember WHO you are working for… You are employed by ME.”

That being said, my Big Boss upstairs has called me to a season of SLOWING DOWN. (He has instigated this mandatorily through my continued struggle with pneumonia and other physical junk.) I have struggled taking time to rest and be with Him via Sabbath and regular sabbaticals. And this inability to physically slow down is spilling over into my spiritual/emotional life.

So, in a challenging act of obedience, I am taking a few weeks to reduce my blogging from daily (aka  five days a week) to three days a week. It might be temporary. It might be permanent-ish. Only God knows. (Literally.)

It kind of freaks me out. Because I like my routine. But I know that the Lord knows what He is doing. Plus, He has called my husband to tackle another month of the 7 Experiment by Jen Hatmaker... So for the next month we are fasting MEDIA. As in, no TV, no digital games and minimal Facebook/Twitter time for me (to simply keep my ministry going.) I am allowed 8 min per day on Facebook, 5 or less on Twitter. (And yes, I use a timer.) Oh, and absolutely no technology after my hubby walks in the door from a day of drill sergeant-ing.  Which is a great excuse to try out this less-computer, more-Jesus lifestyle.

I am not quite sure what this new season looks like for us… But I am excited to see what God is going to do!

Overruling the Opposition to Obedience,
SGK

PS: Where do you struggle most in your life with being obedient to God? What are your biggest obstacles or opposition? It would be so encouraging to hear about how God lifts you up through your experiences. Leave a comment below!

So long, Anxious Heart

I scan my list… Do I have everything? What if I forget something? I swallow the lump that is growing in my throat. My heart starts to beat faster. I glance down at my watch… Should I leave now? Or do I have more time?

If you have been hanging out with me here at 7 Days Time for a while, you have figured out that I am something of a worrywart. Honestly, it is super annoying and exhausting. Fortunately, God has used 2012 (and a majority of my adult life) to slowly but surely start weaning me from worrying. But he’s not done yet.

I’ve always heard that worry is like a rocking chair– it gives you something to do, but gets you nowhere. (Can I get an amen?!?!) And let’s not forget to mention that worrying is a sin… Every time we let our mind/heart melt into that puddle of anxiety, it is like we are saying that God isn’t enough and we don’t REALLY trust His plan for us.

Just the other day, I was pouring out my heart to my sweet husband about my current worries that I was battling: Health, family, finances, army life, future etc. And that wonderful man spoke some much-needed (but kinda difficult) truth into my life:

“Sharita… there are ALWAYS going to be things we CAN worry about. But we have a choice… We can choose to worry or choose to simply TRUST GOD.”

Sigh. I don’t know about you, but I have a long way to go…

But here’s the awesome and encouraging news: We don’t have to go alone. God has given us tools and community to combat this issue in our life.

Which leads to my BIG ANNOUNCEMENT for today. Ready? I hope you are sitting down…

If you are a worrier, know a worrier, have been a worrier, worry that you might become a worrier (ha!) or anything of the sort, I invite you to come on a journey– a journey to calm our anxious hearts.

Eternal Youth

I don’t know about you… but I could definitely use a makeover.

Starting September 9, my friend/boss/mentor Kelli Wommack and I will be offering a bible study called “Calm My Anxious Heart” by Linda Dillow on Sunday nights from 5 – 6:30 pm at Christ Community Church in Columbus, GA for those of you who are local and can attend.

For those of you who aren’t local (which I know is a majority of my audience,) beginning September 10, we will be offering this study via online right here at 7 Days Time and on Facebook! WHOOT! Cool, huh? So whether you are local or in South America, you can participate! We are super excited about this and will be giving more details very soon. So if you are interested in either the Sunday night study or the online study, please let me know by leaving a comment below. Oh, and please share this with your friends if you think they might be interested!

I have a sneaky suspicion that this could change ALL of our lives. I’m not even kidding. I’m stoked. And hope you are too!

I feel incredibly blessed that God has placed this opportunity for us to trade our anxiety for trust– together, as a community, both online and in person. Please, if this study sounds like something God has brought across your path for a reason, don’t be shy– jump aboard and let’s prepare to let God transform our hearts and minds. Again, leave a comment below so I can get you signed up :-)

It’s time my friends… Time to say “So long, anxious heart.”  Who’s with me?

Goodbye worries, Hello Trust,
SGK

“Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.” ~Philippians 4:6-7 (MSG)

On our Tippy Toes (Five Minute Friday)

Hello all! We have made it to another Friday once again. (See, no matter what you do or don’t get done today, you can at least say you survived (and hopefully thrived) through another week!)

Fridays are extra special ’round these parts. It is the day where I link up with our favorite Gypsy Mama Lisa-Jo Baker for Five Minute Friday.

Five Minute Friday is just like it sounds– she gives us a prompt, then we write for five minutes. Sounds easy enough, yes?

Five Minute Friday

Here’s the kicker– As we let the words flow, there is no over-thinking or editing. We just go with it and see what Jesus comes up with via our fingers in five minutes.

Today’s prompt: STRETCH

Ready? GO!

******

A cheerful (ok, slightly annoying) tune plays on my phone as my alarm rings. My eyes reluctantly flutter open. Time to face another day. I lay flat on my back, stretch my arms out as far as they go, straighten my legs, yawn and…

POP!

Ow!!! Cheese and crackers, that HURT!! What I intended to be a good morning stretch resulted in popping or pulling something in my neck/back area that hurt for 5 days. (True story.)

Sometimes, when we are stretched… it can hurt.

Yes, even when God does the stretching.

However, the best news about God stretching us is that He doesn’t injure us beyond reconciliation. Sure, it might be painful and unpleasant for a little while– but down the road, we discover that the trial or experience that stretched us was really for our own good and God’s glory.

We must allow God to stretch us in our lives, families, ministries, careers you name it. For only when we are stretched do we know how high or how far we can go in the name of Jesus.

Are you stiff and sore today in your relationship with Christ? When was the last time you have asked him to stretch you? What happens when God stretches you to your capacity? I would love to hear your thoughts– leave a comment below.

Now, if you will excuse me… God is calling me to do my daily stretching– heart tugs, open hand extensions and most of all, tippy toe calf raises as we stretch for heaven.

STOP!!

*****

Thanks for stopping by, peeps– I always appreciate your presence! May you have a wonderful and blessed weekend– and see you back here on Monday morning! (I have a lil surprise to share with all of you!)

Stretching for God,
SGK

“We’re able to stretch our hands out and receive what we asked for because we’re doing what he said, doing what pleases him.” 1 John 3:22 (MSG)

True Love Is… (Just A Quick Reminder)

Hello darling readers… due to my continued exhaustion via life/pneumonia/army, I am taking a quick brain breather and resharing with you one of my favorite posts… about marriage and Jesus. (Two of my favorite topics!)  I would love to hear your fresh thoughts on what YOU believe true love really is in your life– in marriage, in your relationship with Christ or when/where ever! Leave a comment below. (Please and thank you.)

Thanks for your continued patience while I get back on my feet. Looking forward to getting back in the groove sooner than later. (Jesus willing.)

Much love,

SGK

******

I can think of a variety of descriptions for “True Love,” specifically within marriage. Some of these ideas include rewarding, challenging, refreshing, educational, hilarious, frustrating, growth-oriented, blessed… Oh, and we can’t forget that true love in marriage is precious (both truly precious and also sometimes a little sarcastically precious.)

Recently, I was reminded how truly precious true love can be, especially within our marriage.

Some might say that true love is small acts of kindness, roses, chocolates, hugs and kisses. While all of those things are great (and I love them all) here are a few different ideas about what true love is for us.

True love is… a husband and wife constantly debating the appropriate temperature  on which to set the thermostat, and still being able to suck it up when the “other” temperature wins out for the day.

True love is… not completely freaking out to the point of hysteria and/or silence when a wife realizes that her husband has used her toothbrush simply because his bathroom was “too far away.”

True love is… a husband that remembers to roll the garbage out to curb on Thursday nights without being asked.

True love is… a wife “babysitting” her husband’s brewing/fermenting batch of beer that has to be kept cool and adding ice to it while he has overnight staff duty… without being asked.

True love is… receiving a text from a husband asking you to ice his fermenting beer and the wife has already completed the task 10 minutes before.

True love is… a husband grilling a steak willingly and hesitantly steaming some veggies for supper while a stressed out wife works on homework/church stuff.

True love is… a wife submitting to weekly trips to Buffalo Wild Wings.

True love is… a husband supporting a wife’s fitness goals, while at the same time reminding her that she is beautiful just as she is.

True love is… a husband trying new foods cooked by his wife, even though he initially said he wouldn’t like it– then being humble enough to admit it was awesome.

True love is… going to church together whenever the army schedule allows it.

True love is… doing each other’s laundry and dishes, no matter who’s turn it is.

True love is… an army wife remembering to be frustrated with the army and not her husband when schedules are jacked up and less than productive decisions are made.

True love is…. a husband patiently holding his wife while she cries for a reason that cannot specifically be determined.

True love is… a husband and wife willing to lose valuable sleep to talk out issues just to avoid going to bed angry.

True love is… praying together for others and remembering to turn to God in prayer in the middle of an argument.

True love is… awesome to experience, blessed by Christ and an opportunity to grow together.

This list might be a little bit unorthodox… but for us, it’s all true. Another sign of true love is sacrifice. The greatest form of sacrifice that I can think of was the body of Jesus Christ– what an incredible representation of true love! I am not only thankful to be in a marriage that is based on true love, but also in a relationship with Christ that is the epitome of True Love.

So what IS true love? True love is sacrifice. True love is Christ.

Love to love and be loved,

SGK

“God, God, a God of mercy and grace, endlessly patient—so much love, so deeply true—loyal in love for a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, rebellion, and sin.” — Exodus 34:4 (MSG)

A Lil Rest Stop

I have to be honest.

I am really tired.

Actually, “weary” might be a more accurate word.

There’s a lot going on in our dear little Knobloch household, from my sweet husband’s crazy drill sergeant schedule to my bout with pneumonia (still ongoing), ministry, life decisions etc.

So yes, I’m weary.

I hope you can say that you are in a different season of life, but I am willing to bet AT LEAST one of you reading this today is just… blah. Tired. Spent. Worn. Sick and tired of being sick and tired.

So today, we are taking a little rest stop. Kind of like those convenient little buildings on the side of the interstate with the bathrooms, room to stretch our legs and vending machines. (And yes, this rest stop is going to be clean and classy.)

For today’s 7 Days Time moment, we are literally going to briefly STOP… and REST. A little pit stop in our day.

And I’m serious. Don’t roll your eyes and think it doesn’t apply to you. Even if you have never felt more energized in your life, a quick breather will do you good.

God told me so.

Take a moment to push play on the following little snippet from my iTunes library. (Or if you just want to sit in silence, that is cool too. Or pick your own tune. There’s no rules. Other than to do this. Please.) Seriously, take a moment to close your eyes and breath deeply– in the nose, out the mouth.

Music Snippet:  When I Survey The Wondrous Cross

Ask the Lord to speak into your heart.

Let’s take a lil rest stop… before we continue with our day.

Resting in His Presence,
SGK

Kiss Big Buts Goodbye

I like big buts and I cannot lie.

Before you think I am about to burst into the chorus of a rather scandalous hip hop song from the 90′s, let me clarify: this post has absolutely nothing to do with fitness or what size of pants you wear. (If I had the magic formula to make those kind of butts shrink, I would probably be hosting an entirely different ministry page.)

However, the big buts I’m talking about always show up in my relationship with God.

And it’s not that I necessarily LIKE them– but I default to them.

Sigh. Old habits die hard.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m the only one. But here’s how things usually go down.

There I am, doing my thang, “patiently” (ha?) waiting for the Lord to reveal the next steps or provide clarity in some area in my life. I have a pretty good idea of what I expect (hope) to happen. Finally, an answer comes. My first default response?

“Thanks God… BUT…”

Enter stage left: THE BIG BUT.

When God has other plans that differ from MY ideas of what I wanted, I sadly don’t default to gratitude. I stick a big “but” back in His face.

“Hey God, I appreciate this answer… BUT what about…??”

“Lord, I know you know what you are doing and all, BUT are you SURE?!?”

“Father, I thanks for this… BUT what if…?”

Or my panicky, 2-year-old reactionary favorite… (Imagine with huge watery eyes and a quivery lip…)

“Buuu…Buu… BUT GODDDDDDD!”

I have to say I kind of doubt the Lord appreciates my “big but” responses. I honestly can’t imagine that my “Big But” responses ever evoke this “positive” reaction from Him:

“GASP!!! You are so right, my daughter!! I totally forgot about that… Let me go ahead and tweak my plan to fit what you had in mind.”

(Side note: Let’s rejoice we don’t worship a sarcastic or snarky God.)

Instead, with each big but that I toss back at the Lord, I am sure He lets out a loving sigh and smiles gently, saying softly, “Oh sweet daughter… TRUST ME.”

Getting rid of our “big buts” in life takes a little bit of work and a lotta bit of grace. It’s gonna take practice, but we can start today. First, instead of defaulting back to our temper tantrum fleshy selves, we can take a second and breath… Then, we can approach the throne with open hands of submission, fully trusting that WHATEVER God has planned for us is for our good, knowing our limited sight doesn’t allow us to see the entire picture.

Then, every time our “big but” tries to show back up, we repeat the above process, asking God to help us kiss big buts goodbye forever.

What areas of your life do you struggle with “big buts” the most? Is it your marriage? Family? Kids? Career? Your plans vs. His plans? I know I struggle… Please leave a comment below!

Remember, we are all in this together, battling the “big buts” of life. Let’s start today… and kiss the big buts goodbye… Forever.

Puckerin’ Up to kiss buts goodbye,
SGK
